Most portable sites automatically switch to portable layout when visiting it on a handheld device so I imagine a simple code snippet would suffice. Then you wouldn't even have to log in to see the lite version.

Not only does vbulletin have a mobile plugin that helps avoid that, most sites can be set to look different based on the browser you use.
