what's your experience with the quality of guitars by company, in a Quality:Price ratio sort of idea, so higher price lower quality, very bad, higher quality lower price, very good.

in my experience, Epiphone is great; considering I have a 650 dollar Korean built version of a 2300 dollar American built guitar. Epiphones do have their fallbacks, the wiring is all messed up in some guitars, but that's no problem for me, I've switched out almost everything electronic at this point anyway, the frets are nice and smooth, grover tuners hold their tune quite strongly, neck stays straight and is nice and thick

one problem that I could see coming up for people is the quality of finish, Epis have some gorgeous finishes sometimes, but gibsons are consistently beautiful. Also, gibsons use nitrocellulose finishes, and I'm pretty sure epiphone uses polyurethane finishes, then again, between Polyurethane, Polyester, and Nitrocellulose finishes, it's all a matter of sacrifice.

anyway, epiphones, you get what you pay for, good price for a good guitar.

for me ive always had good luck buying medium quality medium price. later on you can fix it up as you go so it doesnt stay at that medium quality. my current guitar cost 625ish and ive put about 250 in it. new neck, pickups, strings and what not

This is really hard! From personal experience, it varies greatly. Some high-end guitars like Gibsons and Ibanez have regular to sometimes poor quality control, where they'll sometimes leave a neck set slightly off or with a wood that has knots or other slight defects.

Fenders have always been great in my opinion, I've only really played with stratocasters, but I played lots of them, and they never felt clunky to me. They seemed to be made regularly and checked thoroughly. Someday I hope to own a strat of my own.

In terms of acoustic guitars, ONE brand I want to warn y'all about is Ibanez. Their quality control is HORRIBLE for acoustics. Back when I worked at my old store, the amount of times we've ordered some Ibanez acoustics and that they arrived with defects, we just stopped ordering them unless asked by a customer. Commonly were cracks, wood knots, blemishes, and once we had a neck that was literally cracked in half at the nut. I see alot of 'NEW' Ibanez guitars for sale in pawn shops for cheaper, but thats because they all have little defects of their own.

Ibanez is great, I'm not dissing them, but I'm dissing their acoustic guitars. They're made to LOOK like great expensive guitars, but feel and sound like shit.

My current main guitar is a Fernandes Revolver Elite. I've never played a Fernandes before, and I think this one retails for around 1400 new. I found it for 750 bucks used, and I decided I would give it a shot. I was really impressed overall, I liked the shape, the finish, the neck feels alot like a Gibson neck. It's thick but slightly thinner than your usual Les Paul. The sustainer also impressed me alot!

I'll definetely keep an eye out for Fernandes guitars in the future.

I'm guessing you guys never got into the detail of the type of finish or stuff like that huh?

i had an ibanez acoustic once, shitty tone and little to no sustain. sold it for about 30. however they make some interestingly decent 12 strings.

i wish i could get my hands on a jackson pre-fender buyout

finish is a small part of why i buy. if you can get a great guitar with a cool finish its like having your cake and eating it, but with enough to share with everyone who sees it

I've always appreciated the nice looks of acoustic ibanez, they always had nice inlays, interesting colours and all that, but they had faults too commonly, and they never sounded any good for their price.

I've always suggested Mid-range Yamaha's that were half the price over the Ibanez guitars to my customers. Yamaha can sometimes be surprising.

yeah, you guys didn't really get what I was saying

A guitar's finish defines it's tone, finishes bind and restrict the guitar, and on acoustics, take up the majority of the weight of the guitar

Nitrocellulose finish is the weakest of finishes, but it lets the guitar breath, amazing tone, and it gets thinner over time, letting the wood age naturally

Polyester finish is the strongest of finishes, it doesn't let the wood breath at all, it's commonly referred as a 'thick skin' finish, the wood is hermetically sealed basically

Polyurethane finish is somewhere between the two of those finishes

Gibson uses nitro, fender uses polyester (traditionally; I think the new american strats use polyurethane), and Ibanez uses polyurethane I believe, except for the Mahogany Hardtail RG which uses a nitro finish.

also, the thicker the finish, the more binded the wood, the brighter and more precise the sound, the thinner the finish, the less binded the wood, the more mellow and sustained the sound

Boffer Clock

oh, right. i never went way too far into that no. i mostly just tinker around until i get the sounds i want. dont get me wrong i know the research would help i just have more fun my way i guess. as far as that goes though id have to say polyurethane. i like my tone to have a somewhat militant sound

a trick that eddie van halen came up with should be put into use in every fender guitar, his control cavities in his wolfgang guitars are unpainted, they're exposed to the elements so to speak, and because of it, the wood ages and the tone breathes, while having the protective advantages of the polyester finish

I'd love to have a nitro finish on my guitar, but the polyurethane sounds fine.

BoulderClock

Ive got a custom Fender American tele that cost me about 1400 USD, but my favorite guitar I own is my Canadian made Godin freeway classic that I bought for 450 USD.

So it all depends, you could find a guitar in a dump that feels better to play for you than a 3000 dollar guitar.

Yamaha is a hard one here. I have a friend that has a Yamaha, and it's an absolute piece of shit. My Yamaha acoustic is an LL500, I'm pretty sure it was the top of the line from their Lotus series.

Basically, during the 90's, Yamaha dedicated a certain number of their top luthiers to making high-quality instruments with high-quality materials, and this is what the Lotus line was made from. Unfortunately they stopped making them, for reasons that I still do not know.

My LL500 cost me 900 used, and it easy compares to a Martin D-28
