What bugs me about this is that there's some legitimate things they could be focusing on, (male rape victims not taken seriously, women getting the better deal in divorce and custody battles by default, etc) but instead it's pretty much just rampant misogyny from neckbeards still bitter about that one girl in highschool they bought a bunch of gifts for that wouldn't put out. Nearly every MRA I see is a sentient fedora masturbating in a pile of cheetos.

memes weren't, like, a thing back then. they didn't have a name, other than "fad" or "web phenomenon" (or "macro" which had a much more specific meaning that now is also just "meme"), and they were kind of just... permeating?

ok, you know how the way Japanese people respond to Ronald McDonald is not a meme, per se, but it's a thing that pops up every so often? like, we've seen the big ones- the ytp's, and the sexy female Ronald, and some specific horror parodies, and reposting those specific things is old hat, but Ronald himself is still fair game, and when he showed up on salty bet and handed Thanos his ass it was just hilarious. everything used to be like that. everything used to be Ronald McDonald. the AYB video was old, but as a nebulous sort of funny thing that exists, its permutations were everywhere. things weren't delineated back then. nowadays every thing is a thing and has a shelf life of three days before it's old and just pisses people off. we're all hyper aware of the timeliness of our comments and content (WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY). the internet used to be just kind of a swampy morass of derpery, and ayb was a part of it. as a result we (the clock crew) were much more willing to embrace memes, until, like... I guess Portal is probably the breaking point, because it was just so clearly and visibly A Thing. the Portal memery was just really in your face with all the ways that memes are terrible and basically an awful way to humor each other on the web. Portal and 300. and Chuck Norris. thereabouts.

we used to make our own memes. we had forums wide Matrix: Reloaded and Star Wars fads, complete with signatures, flash movies, avatars, name changes, and jokey role-playing. I guess that one Phoenix Wright thread was the same sort of thing, but it was on a different scale, and that and the StarmanClock vampire slayers are the only ones that I can think of in the last, like, 7 years. now role playing is for weirdos who role play, and popular movies are a kind of low culture that aren't to be emulated too closely. we're a lot more stodgy about this shit than we readily admit. where's our Inception parody? where's our Game of Thrones? our Attack on Titan? I think we kind of like to think of ourselves as persisting in something resembling a constant state, but 2004 Clock Crew would have been ALL OVER that shit, and who even knows what 2001 clock crew would have done with it?

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, because there are reasons we moved away from that approach, but I think those reasons are partially due to the way the web has begun to solidify in the years since, like, MySpace, and I do think it's curious how we've found ourselves outside of that
