noob question, but what's the easiest way to accomplish this? if I were on ubuntu or something it'd be super easy I'm sure, but I feel like I'm probably going to end up typing "ibus" a few times

today I got out of a dependency hell involving c++, gcc, python and perl all being old and got my "upgradable packages" from 1200+ down to like 600 or something, just gotta go through and see what libs I can update without aptitude offering to delete every program I actually use

if you have a /usr/share/X11/xkb folder, it's already there and possibly accessible from an easy GUI option menu that I'm sure you never use. In fact, I only know this folder exists because I had to edit some button or another on the keyboard map. I don't remember which and I will save you from this bullshit by not telling you, but I know that coming off an actual mac for years I'd feel the wrong one again when it pops back up

okay back to SETTINGS, Region & Language ==> Input Sources. It'll have English, or English (QWERTY) or whatever. There is, I shit you not, one that is just called English (Macintosh). Boom. You're done. IF YOU WANTED NORMAL QWERTY, IDIOT. Now you need a "third level selector"! That's fancy talk for a different kind of shift button. Maybe you'll be able to do it here, but I couldn't. This is where you may end up being on your own (maybe editing YOUR map in one of xkb's endless folders will help) BUT, on GNOME, there's a program called GNOME Tweaks. It does nothing that you can't do with the command line, but I'll say how to do this on Tweaks since it'll at least push you in the right direction for googlin': Tweaks ==> Keyboard & Mouse ==> Additional Layout Options ==> Key to choose the 3rd level. I have mine set to Any Win. ...actually, fuck that, I do want my right one to function as Super. OKAY I have mine set to Left Win. OKAY. Now, the third level selector will work how Opt (alt, but in a different physical spot) did on a Mac, when typing. Super + 2 = ™, Shift + Super + 8 = °, etc. Have fun with it. Thinks like ', that is, Super + e, expect you to type a vowel after, to make a é í ó. Tilde, E, U, and I have 'em. There are more but I don't use them enough to just know

But like, it does get useful. When I'm on my phone or feeling like a real lazy shit, I'll double hyphen for a dash. On this, it's (I'm gonna start saying Option even though in that guide you set it to left Super) Opt + Shift + - = —. You can do hella deviantart smileys ¯\_(°_o)_/¯ (opt + shift + comma, twice (since it's one of those ones that affect a later letter. ¯, ā, ō)) ō_ô. Holding Opt with my fingers on 2, R, and G are great when something's Extra Super Protected By Law™®©™®©™©®©©©®™. I get my approximate numbers most circa-ed with opt + x. ≈69% of the time, at least. Use delta in my notes, ∆ ∂ hill ye. I love æ, and conveniently, the capital is just that plus shift.
