decided to read Pluto, a MATURE MANGA for SERIOUS ADULTS, because somebody told me it covers the "robots trying to be like people" stuff from Nier Automata but with more thematic clarity

but first I read the wikipedia page and it said it was based on a volume of Astro Boy, so I decided to read that volume of Astro Boy

turned out to not really be necessary, so far, I think
although Pluto has been a lot more respectful of Montblanc, which I appreciated, r.i.p. king

BUT I'm always amused at how arbitrary the morals in Osamu Tezuka's stories are

e.g. Astro Boy asks Professor Ochanomizu to upgrade him from a hundred thousand "horsepower" (?) to a million horsepower, and Professor Ochanomizu is like "Astro Boy... my son... being a great robot isn't just about your strength, any more than being a great human is. you're not meant to have a million horsepower. you're perfect the way you are. you'll see that one day."
then he gets kidnapped
then Dr. Tenma, Astro Boy's deadbeat dad/original creator, shows up in his flying hot rod and is like "hell, I'll do it"
and Astro Boy is like "yessssss"
and Tenma warns him, "hey, if I do this, you're gonna go a little nuts, okay? it's dangerous. you're not made to have a million horsepower"
and Professor Ochanomizu appears in his thoughts like "Astro Boy, don't! you're perfect the way you are"
and Astro Boy is like "but I need it to fight Pluto (the fighting robot from this volume of Astro Boy that the manga Pluto is named after)!"
so Tenma gives Astro Boy a million horsepower
and Astro Boy goes nuts

how would you expect that story to end?
chances are you've already written it in your head, just from exposure to a million stories exactly like it

and you're almost certainly wrong
Astro Boy just recovers and keeps his one million horsepower strength
so he goes to rescue Ochanomizu, and Ochanomizu is like "Astro Boy what the FUCK. why do you have a million horsepower? you don't need that"
and Astro Boy is like "yes I do"
and then they just never bring it up again, he's just ten times stronger from now on

anyway I posted this because the version of Astro Boy I read was localized so long ago that they actually flipped the artwork to make it read left to right, and I got used to it and now I keep tripping up because Pluto is localized in the tokyo pop "authentic manga experience" style and you know,
I never really had a preference before, but I've got to be real, I think I like the left to right style better. I know the artists tend not to like it but it just flows more naturally when you're reading in english

PhantomCatClock

I got used to it, you look for the right edge of the bubbles and no matter the vertical placement you go rightest to leftest

disney took out one of the cat's lines in kiki's delivery fanservice to make it appeal more to westerners because "ey isn't that a little fucked tho for real" and just

never change, disney

you're not even giving me any options are you? not only do I have to respond to this post but I have to bump pluto up in my to-read list. past the guy's other works even. how dare you.

finish pluto and then read a god fearing american left to right comic. then alternate AGAIN. fucks with your brain going back and forth let me tell you. then sometimes the pages almost make sense that way so you dont catch yourself for a while and the nonsense builds up until the "what the fuck is happening" entropy reaches it's peak and realize you have to reread a whole damn chapter. then when you're used to it you start reading old mirrored shit backwards. double backwards.

see I just finished rereading the last chapter of understanding comics and I'm gonna read the newest chapter of one punch man after I eat a sandwich. then I'm gonna read every vertical newspaper comic ever made upside down because that's how the fucking pros do it.

I saw gundam 83 and the subtitles were for the dub, so there's this point where they're all standing in respectful silence because a fellow soldier just died but the subs say AWWWWKWAARRRRRD or something. it was incredible.

PhantomCatClock

brugh NICE also this reminded me, I wanted to look up shonen jump but in japanese

SHONEN JUMP WAS DISCONTINUED IN 2011!!!!!!!!!!

it's okay, though, it went digital only

WHICH GOT DISCONTINUED IN 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but not in japan so nevermind. also the girl shonen jump is called "cookie" so that's cute OH ALSO they have shonen jump for "for adults" which sounded hot but is mostly stupid boring adult stuff and only some hot stuff but even then it's like.. not? the first comic i clicked on looked like vcr's avatar hitting on a hot librarian but then the hot librarian needed to take advantage of the guy somehow so she tolerated it and started tutoring him and then i stopped because it was all in japanese and i needed to be reading like.. yotsuba and even then i'm not that far along, yet

i forgot what i opened the reply window to post about but pretend i did instead of going off on a tangent

PhantomCatClock

I do wanna read more graphic novels/mangnas/comicks its a medium I never rlly got into much. I've only read Watchmen and Batman: The Long Halloween and both of them were SICK. I also read some shitty one about a drama class when I was like 10 but that's besides the point (it wasn't shitty actually I remember enjoying it)

i dont have a point but thats also besides the point because I wanna read some more comeeks. Is DKR as good as they say? I like the comics that do cool stuff with page structure as like a storytelling tool, like the start of the last issue of Watchmen. Shits so cool. reminds me alot of when games do freaky stuff with the way you interact with them for thematic reasons, WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY NECKST POINT(?)

at the end of Bioshock when you're talking to ryan in the office and it's like OH shiT the big reveal, WHY does it ONLY at that point decide to take control away from the player. Like I thought the whole point was that you've been controlled for the whole game, so would it not make moar sens so that when ryan goes (sit) it comes up the little thing at the top of the screen "Objective: Sit" and then so on until u kill him? Is it because ryan is telling u to do it? Is it implying you've been playing as atlas controlling jack for the whole game?

WUT???

PhantomCatClock

what was it with forum moderators getting pissy and locking threads that got bumped after a couple of years

i can understand it re: computer help (which is the only place it still happens to this day) but stop being a nerd, people fifteen years ago

sorry to bump that old idea

RobClock

@k9 DKR is good but overhyped read it but temper expectations

Here's some recs;

(i am a little surprised that US shonen jump got discontinued, but to be fair, the target audience is now 100% ipad kids, and how do you even make money off publishing a monthly brick of wood pulp that only sells to teenage nerds in the US?)

it's hard to find a laptop that even has a built-in cheese drive these days. support for generic usb cheese drives has improved but upstream is one swedish guy and he's getting old. also i just found out that when you're typing a quick reply and hit the quote button on a post, new SMF inserts the quote tag into your post in progress without fucking it up. i love new SMF

negatory capn the thread must remain open so that someone in 2022 can complain that the hacky workaround someone posted in 2011 doesn't work anymore, some saint swoops in with the correct 2022 hacky workaround, and i can still find it because the thread resembles what i googled. locking threads to prevent necrobumps has everything to do with the vanity of forum moderators who don't want to see GREAT NEW REPLIES on CLASSIC THREADS when they hit the new posts butan

i recently remembered (post pandemic) that the local public library has graphic novels, and when i went to go take some out, i was like "cool, there's a bunch of influential and even recent books here that i'd kind of meant to look at, and i don't even have to buy them!!!!" maybe this is also the case for you.

i haven't gone very deep into developing taste in either manga or western comic-book comics, because the stuff i want to hear about and read and buy seems to usually be stuff from artists & publishers outside the monthly serial comic book game and its particular demands. i usually find out about these comics from open-minded shops and distributors like desert island comics or domino books. bubbles fanzine (carried by both of the above) also has its finger on the pulse of what's happening in small-money comics, and is the kind of publication i can't read without writing down more comics to think about buying. that's the only trouble with small press comics... the library won't have 'em and neither will my friends, so it's buy or suffer

that's a good question

I would say, it's probably because that's the first time it would occur to most players to reject the order they're given, so it's the only time they make a point to actually take the option to reject it away from you
