I use them interchangeably, but tbqh in the 90's I never even heard of this business with the hard g, because .gif is usually talked about in contrast with .jpeg, so the voiced palato-alveolar affricate rolls off the tongue better due to the recurrent alliterative consonantal phonetics (fuck you)

 I don't think either is technically incorrect, because it's an abbreviation without a root pronunciation. yes, the g stands for graphic, but you wouldn't call a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus "scubba". it's down to the way the abbreviation, effectively an entirely new word, appears to be pronounced in its standardized language of origin, which in this case could go either way. besides which, the hard g blatantly elbowed its way into the start of "gigabyte", whose suffix's metric origin is the Greek word for "giant". fair's only fair.

bottom line is as long as you understand what the other person is referring to, language has served its purpose. let it be.
