The French occupied this land prior to the British, and during the 'New France' period Cape Breton was called Île Royale. Jimmy Wolfe rolled in, took louisbourg and kept on rolling, the name was changed to Cape Breton. Does the name 'Britain' not also come as a derivative of the Brittany region?

I just learned that Nova Scotia was a Scottish colony for about four years in the 17th century. (It's pretty self-evident with that name, but still, it could also have been named that within a larger British context. By royal decree of 1621: " Which lands aforesaid, in all time to come, shall enjoy the name of Nova Scotia, in America..." (It was called New Holland for a while as well, guess why.))

All in all, I prefer Acadia though.

The Scotch colonial efforts were extremely short lived but yeah Nova Scotia is where they first landed, down in the pictou guysborough area. Acadia and New France can suck my nuts

Acadians are the descendants of french settlers that interbred with the native population (mi'kmaq) and were subsequently ostracized from both communities. The Cajuns are Acadians who left the region during the great expulsion- modern Acadians reside in the southern end of mainland Nova Scotia. I would not be Acadian as I'm third generation Irish on my mothers side and fifth generation English on my father's.
