okay I use lightdm and gnome-screensaver is being a bitch but light-locker is

also being a bitch

already wrote a script calls a dbus monitor to see when my computer is locked and then unlocked because the people at GNOME like making settings that don't do a goddamn thing other than making it impossible to google your issues

fft.

PhantomCatClock

which also doesn't work

VCRClock

in my fresh debian con gnome install, which I'm assuming uses gnome gdm, there was already an It Just Works™ session locker happening

of course I have no idea what process actually does that, I just sort of assumed gnome is the kind of de that expects you to be using stock gnome everything all the way down

<PhantomCatClock> are we talking about the same clock crew

it really must be

Ubuntu has a big friendly [    DESKTOP BACKGROUND    ]        [    LOCK SCREEN BACKGROUND    ] menu. All I did was switch to lightdm because gdm3 was having actual glitches. Right now, the Lock Screen Background™ is ignored, and it just shows my desktop background. Not a big deal, right? I poke at every once in a while

only, after months of it, I'd had enough. It's absolutely gnome-screensaver because when I uninstalled that, my lock screen didn't have a password input. Okay. I change org.gnome.desktop.ScreenSaver picture-uri. Nothing changes. This gconf setting is directly tied to Ubuntu's big friendly menu mentioned earlier—I could open it in dconf-editor and see the value changing in real time when changed from the stock GUI. This value, right now, does nothing. If I change org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri, then the lock screen background changes. Issue: that's my, uh, desktop background. I don't fucking want that the same. Now, add 400 people on StackOverflow or whatever finding out that changing the desktop background fixes the lock screen and being happy about it. I found someone who had the issue in 2011 who at least got it confirmed as an issue before being ridiculed without resolution. THERE IS A SETTING THAT DOES NOTHING IF YOU DON'T USE GNOME ALL THE WAY DOWN.

so yes you are correct how have you been

throw in some shit about /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas, /usr/share/gnome-shell/themes' .css files, and a script made specifically to fix this in my exact version of Ubuntu for my exact setup that also does not yield results and you have a glimpse into about twenty minutes of my whole day

ed: ok that one also expects gdm which i guess raises the question why even write it

maybe gdm is even more broken than you bargained for

I don't really know anything about changing values in "org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri" format, usually I'd just be changing a GUI setting or editing some kinda .conf file

of course, maybe you could do something fucky like using feh or something to set your real desktop background, and letting gnome use what it thinks is your desktop image as your lockscreen image

e never mind, the feh manpage specifically says it doesn't do gnome backgrounds

Oh no, the gconf/dconf was long after giving up with menus and config files. I got my VR headset working this week and that went much more smoothly than trying to change the lock screen background in gnome-ScreenSaver

you know, that thing that has a setting for it and dozens of ways to change that setting

the "tony hawk loves to skate" meme that I predicted two years ago is gaining traction

PhantomCatClock

that prediction was made outside the simulation. it doesn't exist in here. try to find the post if you don't believe me.

I think we're approaching a moment in time when tony hawk will be a post-ironic meme and his mere presence will be instant hilarity

I've been thinking about revisiting my amazing "save the abortion clinic" flash idea but smash mouth is pretty played out, maybe I'll replace them with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk

I was trying to list these out without googling it and realized I pretty much picture the entire new england coast as one long grey concrete block like in grand theft auto 3

New Jersey isn't in New England? Everyone knows the New England coast consists only of coves and weather beaten rocks and lighthouses and beach houses and small marinas. All backdropped by golden autumn trees all year round. Except for the area around Boston maybe.

Goddamn, I randomly dropped a street view pin somewhere on the New England coast and:
