"I was adored once, too" is a shakespeare quote, and one of the saddest sentences in the english language imo. (definitely sadder than hemingway's, sorry, ernie.)
same vibe as "Addicted to Bad Ideas" by World Inferno, sort of, the broken prince, remembering a time when you were something precious to somebody
it says so much without saying it

but I kind of wonder if it was actually intended that way? the context (in Twelfth Night) is that Sir Andrew, who's a bit of a fool, is talking to Toby Belch about Maria, a woman Toby is smitten with. Toby compliments her in a weird way that she probably wouldn't appreciate, and says she adores him, and Andrew replies with the line.
now... I should qualify, I'm not the only one who thinks it's a powerful line, it's broadly regarded as one of the bard's saddest, and it's effective partly because it comes from a pretty non-serious character. it's unexpected, and you kind of have to sit with it a second to be like "fuck, dude."
but I'm hung up on the thought that, what if it wasn't even meant to be sad?
given that Sir Andrew is kind of a dope, what if the intended meaning isn't him revealing that he once was loved deeply and is no longer, suggesting quiet depths, but just a joke about a dumb guy who doesn't know what the word "adore" means?
like, picture Patrick Star saying it. do you see what I mean?
or uhhh another version of the joke (if it were a joke) could be, if Toby Belch had said "she's infatuated with me" and Sir Andrew replied "I went to fatuated once."
?
people who know what they're talking about assure me this is wrong, but I can't unsee it

anyway I was reminded of that because I was reading the avengers academy reboot and it had a really great sad issue spotlighting The Lizard's son (a pretty deep-cut Lee/Ditko character that I honestly completely forgot existed) not because I actually know anything about real literature ok

side note, this comic is kinda selling me on the vertical canvas

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

in the far off horrible future age of next year or maybe the one after ALL comics will be fully vertical.

if you want a vision of the future imagine a bendis conversation vertically descending from a human face forever

wonder what it felt like to be a fuckoff lower manhattan hipster in 1999 and think "porcelain" was hot shit, only for it to appear on Pure Moods III alongside Enya and Yanni in 2001

maybe "porcelain" is actually too late-era Moby for the really cool folks

me at 10:30 pm: I'm definitely going to finish my homework tonight. no more waiting until sunday, I need to develop better habits and I'm starting now

me at 3:00 am: listen. I can't prove it, but Eurotrish from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends was definitely a deep-cut reference to an episode of the 80's Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon. that's season 3, episode 8, "The Chipette Story", one of the semi-rare full half hour episodes. the entire thing is a weird rip-off of An American Tail where we explore the backstory of the Chipettes. they originally belonged to an orphan girl in Europe named Olivia who dreamed of going to America. like every episode of Alvin & The Chipmunks, there's a lot of singing. the Chipettes are separated from Olivia when they travel to America without her, but reunite with her in the episode. Eurotrish has a chipmunk-like face and one of her main traits is that she is constantly breaking into song to the annoyance of other characters, and her backstory is that she was imagined by a girl in Europe named Olga whom she was separated from when she came to America and she longs to reunite with her. the pie in the face is at the end of the episode, when Eurotrish returns home, Olga reveals she had her sent away because she couldn't stand all of her singing. I have looked around the internet, I have checked wikis, tvtropes, reddit, nobody else seems to have made this connection but I'm NOT crazy. Craig McCracken and his team were total pop culture magpies and happily sampled and snuck in sly, layered references, just look at Wilt. it's completely conceivable that they could have slipped in a subtle reference that only a hardcore 80's cartoon kid could even maybe catch. what I need to do now is scour dvd commentary tracks, interviews, social media posts, convention footage, etc. and look for any confirmation I can find th

i remembered some actually useful finnish language tips if you ever come to visit, since you're likely to eat something

if you want to compliment the meal you can say "kyllähän tätä mieluummin syö ku selkäänsä ottaa" which means "i'd rather eat this than get my ass kicked, at least" or then less common but a good one that my coworker says about everything "kyllähän tästä paskat tekkee" which means "it'll make for a shit at least"

I will not do any of that research or watch it again but I just barely remember that chipmunks special and based on that I think your conspiracy theory is probably accurate

VCRClock

no, actually, it does pass the Bechdel test: two women, talking to each other, about something other than a man. just because the 'something' is usually the crazy situation Alvin got them into doesn't mean they aren't fully developed characters. they have distinct personalities! jeanette's the hot one, brittany is the one you're supposed to think they wanted you to think was hot, and eleanor is the d.u.f.f./comedy relief. now that's how you write women.
