I tricked the new york times website into letting me use the "wordle bot" for free whenever I want. it's just a little statistics tracker and calculator that tells you how your luck and "skill" (scarequotes because I have some grievances with how they measure this) measure up to the average player that day. they give like one free use of the wordlebot to people who aren't subscribers to try to tempt them into subscribing so they can use wordlebot whenever they want. I really doubt it has gotten a single person to pay them a single cent, but I do like it. and it turns out all you have to do is disable a couple of overlays. idk why they wouldn't just check if you have a subscription. like why would it just still be fully usable under the thing that tries to get you to give them money? lol.

anyway wordlebot tells you like "here's what n other players did when faced with the same situation"
and for some reason my goal in wordle changed from being good at wordle to finding words nobody plays on their first turn. it's harder than you might think. like "jazzy" is so obviously a terrible idea, why would anyone play it? but idk maybe people do it to challenge themselves

I found a good one that nobody else seems to use. at first I was just checking to see if it was consistently not being used, but after a while I felt some ownership of it. this word is my word, and it gives me a little spark of joy every time it says "No one in our sample of 1,773,112 completed Wordles faced this scenario!"

two or three days ago I got a "here's what one other person did when faced with the same scenario", meaning somebody else played my word, and I'm still not over it. how dare they? I'm the only one that's allowed to play "pipit" (any of various species of small, drab, ground feeding insectivore perching birds of open country)

On their 2024 singles and self-titled full length you'll hear doom metal, folk, and shoegaze combining into a wave of sound that ranges from a light sonic mist to a deluge of riffs.

I wanted to do some light reading and blew through some of the percy jackson books (I wanted to rediscover the version of myself that would just read a book cover to cover in a day and they seemed like decent candidates) and at several points I was nauseous and my skull was on fire

switched to supernote and it got better

I'm not sure if I'm mentioned this but for a long time I hated reading YA because it felt really condescending to read. I talked to my psychiatrist about it once because we like to get off-topic and he said "you know what it's like? this is disgusting, but I feel it's like someone chewing your food for you." and I laughed and agreed with him
but either something in my brain broke since then or the percy jackson books are just pretty good for all ages
actually I'm pretty sure the plot of the first book requires fourth order theory of mind, which is pretty impressive. the plot hinges on Luke knowing that Ares will know that Percy will think that Hades thinks that Zeus will think Poseidon stole from him, and all of those levels of belief about what other people will believe are present in the text simultaneously, but at no point does it feel like you're committing an impressive act of psychological gymnastics to keep up, it's remarkably straightforward. I thought rick riordan might be a great writer but then I read the next few books and I think he's really good

anyway I started writing this post because he described an island as "saddle-shaped" and I spent like 3 minutes squinting into the middle distance and trying to imagine how the hell an island could be shaped like a hyperbolic paraboloid

then shrugged and moved on. but then he did it again
so I did an image search for "saddle-shaped" and realized I'm fucking stupid lol
the percy jackson books are written in first person by percy jackson. when a 13 year old (or just any normal person) hears "saddle shaped island" they don't picture an an impossible landmass shaped like a fucking pringles chip, they mean from the side it looks like a bimodal distribution

you have to be some kind of stupid fucking smart guy to think that "saddle shaped" means a hyperbolic paraboloid

also I've definitely posted this before but it's a good idea to set an alarm to remind you to rest your eyes every two hours. just takes your eyes off the screen, look around a bit, close them if they feel relieved when you do that. give it 30 seconds to a minute before looking back
my optometrist told me this and said they'd actually prefer if you did it every 20 minutes but if they told people that no one would do it

just one of those basic things like "stay hydrated" and "practice good sleep hygeine" that weirdly do improve the quality of your life but we have some kind of innate human rejection to for some reason

to be clear, I struggle with doing even the 2 hour version lol
