I liked it alright. Homecoming was like bum ba dum ba all the songs on the album coming to a head wooooo, and the title track wasn't far off from anything off Warning.

Do you have no frame of reference other than what Green Day and Blink 182 called 'punk'? There are few genres of music I dislike more than Sex Pistols British punk (the only punk I listen to is The Ramones - I'm more of a New Wave kinda guy), but their attitude was much more rebellious than some guys in black shirts/ white ties singing about suburbia. You say that Billy Joe got 'better at singing', but punk isn't about singing well, it's not even about singing in tune.

and, on the subject, i believe the clash and the jam had more of the "fuck the system" feel in their music than the sex pistols

green day was basically part of a wave of bands that did for punk what hostel and the like did to exploitation- took something beloved by a small group of people who always thought it was way too fucking messy and horrible for regular people to enjoy, and made it just vanilla enough to fly.

Anywho, I thought American Idiot had it's moments. Altogether it's not a terrible album, but it's way too polished to be good punk but it's not really good pop either. It's somewhere in between and it left me feeling weird. Green Day in general takes way too much shit. They're not terrible, but they're not especially good and they're certainly not a punk band anymore.
