FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

I highly recommend Kingdom Come and Transmetropolitan.

TheCheshireClock

"There is no hope for the world" type comics make me a sad kitty-kat.

Killing Joke for the win though.

AnkhClock

I've read Watchmen and Maus, as well as a few others. I want to get into some other graphic novels, so I'll be checking out some of these reccomendations.

the joke is a loose metaphor for the situation between batman and the joker.

the two men in the joke are both crazy. the one who leaps over the gap without any difficulty is batman, the other is the joker. the first lunatic wants to help the second get across the gap by having him walk across the beam of his flashlight, but he's crazy because that's impossible. the second refuses not because it's impossible, but because he doesn't trust the first lunatic. (the cusp of the joke is that they're both too crazy to realize you can't walk across a beam of light.)
likewise, batman wants to rehabilitate the joker, even though it's probably not possible, and the joker won't accept the help because he thinks he's beyond saving.

they're laughing not because the joke is particularly funny, but out of catharsis at the realization of how fucked things are between them. as batman had just said, it's probably leading to both of them destroying themselves, or each other.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

Can this be the western comic megathread? We need one of thems.

I didn't see this until now but thank you for explaining it to me :)
