A while ago I was reading a book on medieval coats of arms, and later I thought I'd try at making a coat of arms for graphic designers.

This is the first concept I made. I made some mistakes in the design which I will iron out in the second run, see if there's any improvements to make. For starters the banner needs to become lighter and the text needs to fit in better. I'm also not sure if I will keep the shading 100% with lines, and maybe I should use some color.

I don't actually read latin though, lorem ipsum is dummytext that graphic designers use to test how their designs look with text in them. The words don't even make sense when you translate them, but I thought it would be appropriate to use them in this context.

An online translator says you posted something with "No one" and "unpunished".

Read up on heraldry. Not only will you learn how to design a proper escutcheon, but you'll learn concepts valuable to graphic design.

Here are some key problems with your design:

Patterns correspond to colors. Your pencil, here, is blue, with purple wood.

Three distinct colors and so much detail to a charge as simple as a pencil is abominable. The point of coats of arms are to be able to recognize the army from up to miles away without a telescope. Heraldry is functional, not decorative.

Your two charges (the circle and pencil) are not aligned with any allowed placement in traditional heraldry. Precision should not come into the play of heraldry. The whole design should be reproducible from a description with as few terms as possible. The more precise you are, the harder it is to meet your demands or possibly even understand your coat's description.

Hmm, maybe I wasn't exactly right to call it coats of arms, I was more thinking of a sign that you would hang outside your shop. An army of graphic designers isn't much use, unless you wanted an army that could impress a crowd with pompous words and lots of design-related slang.

Hmm, the fourth came out a little weird when saving as an image, still looks normal in Flash though.

Another thing, you should try and keep the palette down to as few colors as possible. It makes the forms stand out a lot more. The colors are supposed to be more symbolic than realistic in most cases.

One big problem about the design is the centeredness of it. BIG rule in graphic design is to avoid symmetry unless you can do it really well.
