Sure, it's ignorance. But I mean, the U.S. is a wealthier country, I don't think it's bonkers to assume our health services are more advanced. Not to mention, the death toll (obviously more a biproduct of the amount infected, but still) tells me that they might not have the equipment needed to treat these people.

Also, I think part of the problem is awareness. Since it seems to have originated in Mexico, people weren't aware of it and therefore less inclined to head to a hospital at the first sign of illness.
