I personally like some graffiti, I usually don't tend to see a tag and say "oh man awesome i wish i could write my name here just like every1 else", I usually like clever stickers / legible words or when people make characters and put them all over. It's cool going into different cities and seeing that people you "know" have been there too.

Cadillac, the example you posted doesn't really look like graffiti, it looks like professional work, as in the owner of the store just hired an artist to do that. I mean, it looks really great, is remarkably clean and is a pretty big job overall, especially given that they'd need a ladder to do it. I hardly think it was done by a group of kids, and if it was they probably didn't do it for free or at least knew the owner. I don't think it's graffiti when the guy asks you/provides you the means to do it.

The thing about graffiti is that it's sort of like every other law, like freedom of speech and protection from cruel and unusual punishment. I'm sure that there are lot of people who deserve to die painfully or have their mouths taped shut forever, but if you let it happen to even the people who deserve it, other people can misuse that power and hurt other people. So it's easier to just make no exceptions whatsoever.

The point is, while there are some completely awesome graffiti artists, most are just assholes who want to annoy people by scribbling on stuff that isn't theirs. If you are a real artist like the many examples shown in this thread, you shouldn't need to paint it on public stuff without permission.

putting graffiti on someone's wall without the owner's consent is vandalism though, no matter how beautiful the piece is. the chances that the owner won't sue / have it removed rise as the quality of the graffiti rises, but it's just as illegal to put a fake cellphone number on a public restroom door.
