So here's the deal. The program that we're using to learn flash is bunk. Yesterday it managed to freeze up and subsequently crash Flash CS4 a grand total of four times, and today it managed to kill CS4 twice. The program itself came with no resources for the instructor and does not spell out instructions for the students very well (or at all, in some cases).

Needless to say, an alternative must be obtained. Does anybody know of any decent textbooks for learning flash that don't cost astronomical amounts of cash?

Videos that show a guy coding some stuff (in Flash 8, by the way) and then after that instructions to essentially copy and paste what he did into CS4 with one or two minor changes or several major changes that we were never told how to do.
 
They're not particularly helpful.

Most Flash courses I've taken weren't as informative as I'd like them to have been, ESPECIALLY the ones I took in school :/

I doubt there's much you can learn about flash that you couldn't learn through a combination of trial and error and heavy use of online resources.
