I was going to go all out on this, but I figured some ambient shading might work, as I usually overdo it when I use more than 4 shades.

i dont like the grey lines
well actually they arent bad except around the eyes they look weird
also the left leg looks strange for some reason

The problem is that there's almost no contrast between the light and shade colours and there isn't a clear light source. Don't worry about doing more than two shades, just focus on getting the shadows in the right places.
