I know I've made a lot of bitching about music threads here lately, but Flounder just reminded me that I never bitched about Coheed's latest, Year of the Black Rainbow, which it sounds like a few of you have bought/listened to at least. And usually I bitch about really mainstream shit (not that Coheed's not-popular by any means) and I used to call Coheed my favorite band back in the SSTB IKS days.

But seriously Year of the Black Rainbow is just fucking bad, man. As is usual with Coheed these days, some of the tracks are (kind of) really good. Or at least passably decent. The intro is one of the best they've done, and honestly I would call Far one of their best songs yet. Leaving us with the two singles that are on the weak side of the Coheed singles pool but still songs that sound like they're trying.

But in the grand scheme of their discography, YotBR makes me think that they genuinely, honestly thought that Good Apollo 1 was a good album, not one peppered with pretty bad filler songs and totally lacking in the soaring melodies and breakdowns that made them awesome to begin with (hint: It is). No World for Tomorrow was an uptick, but A.) it still lacks a bit of that awesome climax they used to be able to achieve in their songs (Time Consumer's na-ha-ha-ha's, Everything Evil's Dear Claudio-o's, Three Evils' pull the trigger, The Crowing's dear Ambellina, I could go on) and B.) What the fuck with the last five tracks? The album just kind of instantly become shitty right then and there, and it makes me think that Claudio is just kind of incapable of writing good songs when he's focused too much on his bs concept, which is why GA1 and YotBR fail epically.

Honestly I have not been so un-compelled to listen more than once to an album other than this one. I'm probably gonna' get shit for this one because Coheed is one of those bands but I stress that they were once my favorite and I thought they could do no wrong.

In my opinion, YoTBY didn't grab me in the same way that the other albums apart from NWFT have.

In Keeping Secrets is probably my favourite album they've put out, but No World for tomorrow and Year of the black rainbow have both been a bit of a let down for me.
As for Good Apollo 1, I think it's a fairly solid album albeit one that people only get because they played "welcome home" on guitar hero.

I don't outright hate any of the albums though.

It totally doesn't feel like it fits into the continuity of the Amory Wars either. Not one song brings to mind elements of the other chapters (something I'd grown to love about C&C's catalog) nor does it mention any character names at all. It's like a stand alone album (not a very good one either) and doesn't progress the story (even as a prequel) at all.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

Yeah it was a disappointing album. All their other albums were great in their own ways but this one had maybe three or four good songs and was bland otherwise. The b-side Hush is amazing though. Maybe I'll like YotBR more if I listen to it more, I wasnt huge on NWFT at first but after a few listens I loved it.

I thought it sucked too. I like Far and Here we are Juggernaut, Pearl of the stars was okay. I wouldn't listen to the rest of the tracks unless they came on randomly in shuffle or something.

Man your own jackhammer! Man your battle stations!

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

Okay, after a ton more listens I've decided it isnt a horrible album. Their least good one, but not a bad one. Just average.

More of an old school sound than the last album. I'm optimistic.

I used to love these guys back in my angsty teen days. I've long since been over them, unfortunately.

Honestly, I sort of don't even want to listen to that. I'm sure I'll give it a shot eventually, but I feel like they were barking up the "Second Stage" tree with the last album before it came out too.

FLOUNDERMAN_CLOCK

It's a pretty good start, I like this song. And the album's story is gonna explain why it's called the "Amory Wars" apparently.

Trust me when i say this sounds like something right out of Third Stage or the Good Apollo era. From the sound down to the storytelling. Someone must have smacked some sense into Sanchez.
