Because this way you can see the neighboring sounds, and draw the mouth as it would be in context. When you speak a phoneme you don't use a perfect, identical articulation, but smooth and emphasize against the neighboring phonemes. Without keeping the whole syllable in your mental picture, you tend to lose the distinction between annunciated and normal speaking.

There's also the issue of gestures and microexpressions. If you're conscious of the onset of speech which is punctuated by one of these, you can apply the right anticipation to adequately execute a pairing of gesture/expression and speech.
