(hence training at such a young age, the cults of personality surrounding gym leaders, and the strange way people are so impressed by your status as a trainer.) we're looking at a society that tamed and trained wild animals and repurposed them as tools for battle (a closer analogy than cock fighting might be the titular riders from the Dragonriders of Pern series), as opposed to developing spears and swords. and we're looking at it as that era was coming to an end.
the league might even be the united remnants of military classes from a feudal era, repurposed for sport in a world that's quickly running out of use for such brutality- consider what the development of the master ball, capture styler, and the magnet train would mean in terms of public safety.

Well, the world of Pokemon DOES have spears and swords, and even guns. Yet they still find it necessary to fight with these animals.

most the things I've said itt are just artifacts of how I process shit- loose pretexts and annotations helping me accept and process experiences and information in in a way relative to the world as I understand it, in a kind of mental shorthand, until I'm called upon in some respect to introduce, develop, and defend them as concepts. I need something to bounce off of.
