this is a roguelike and i've heard from fans of the genre, the binding of isaac is really really good.

Well yeah it's a different genre game but I've played it for 20 minutes or so and it's incredibly boring. I thought I might be missing something.

I don't see any way this could be better than Nethack, so whenever I feel the urge to try this game I just go play Nethack instead

This. I for one find it amazingly fun, scavenging for items and the way they pulled the random room generator. The unforgivingness can be intensely frustrating, although it kept me playing for a while because of my obsessiveness to get everything. Although, I really liked SMB, so my opinion is probably a little biased.

Nethack has a GUI prepackaged with it now, if you find the ASCII too hard.

I find the game really fun. It's nice and simple that gets more fun as it goes on.

And this is coming from somebody who loves Super Meat Boy.
