I don't want to get too many games at once, so please recommend 1 or 2 games that are must-haves for the DS.

Well there is Brain Age if she loves Sudoku, MarioKart for you two competing, Phantom Hourglass is good, Phoenix Wright may interest her, EliteBeatAgents is fun too.

that's the closest to a DS I've owned. The dual-screen 1982 Nintendo DK (Donkey Kong). It weighed a ton, but was extreemly durable... So your assistance is greatly appreciated. If there are any other suggestions, keep them coming.

Ds games aren't that great in my opinion. Get a EZ Flash cartridge so you can play GBA games on your DS.

New Super Mario Bros.
Super Princess Peach

I would say New Super Mario Bros. is a must. She may not be into RPGs, though, so FF III may not be for her. Depends on her tastes (if she's played enough games to have any).

Nintendogs is great for the ladies. It's like Tamagotchi that leaves you feeling less soulless and is actually sweet to play.

animal crossing is my all time favourite ds game, and as far as i can tell it's pretty girlish so she should like it i guess.

buy her an r4 so she can rock out to some sweet homebrew like quakeds or pocket physics or secret of monkey island or doom or falling sand game.

Tetris DS is the best puzzle game on the DS in many people's opinions.  New Super Mario Bros is a great platformer and isn't too hard or too easy.  Phantom Hourglass is awesome.  Etc.
