Just before Christmas, my cheap POS microwave broke.  I didn't get a new one because I knew my parents had an old one they would give me the next time they visited-- by that's not until this week.  I've been without a microwave for 3 months.

What I've found out is that although ubiquitous, microwaves are not entirely necesary.  I've gotten used to reheating things in a skillet, and thawing meat in the fridge.
Popcorn in a pot is a billion trillion times better than in a bag-- faster and tastier.  But I've known that for a while.

I almost want to say "screw microwaves," yet I am looking forward to having one again and using it. Isn't that odd? I'll say it again, they're just ubiquitous.

I live with hippies so we don't have a microwave. It was weird at first, but it's not so bad.

The microwave is here now.  I'll probably end up using it, but maybe not as much.

I've always put canned beefaroni and things like that on the stovetop.  As for TV dinners, I tried making one in a skillet, and it sort of worked, but not very well.

I've never had popcorn from anything but a microwave or a movie theater. How would I go about preparing it in a pot?

Buy some yellow popping corn.  The package will tell you how much oil and corn to use.  Put the oil in the pot and turn the stove on medium-high or high.  Put in the corn and oil in and put a cover on the pot.  Wait for it all to pop.  As soon as it stops, dump it all in a bowl.  Eat.

TV dinners can usually be cooked right in their plastic containers on a baking sheet in your oven. I know it works for Hungryman, anyway. Surprisingly, the plastic does not melt.

corn
oil
pan with lid (preferrably glass so you can see the magic happen)

Whenever I make something I rarely use the microwave.

I only use the microwave when I have to work and I can't eat with my parents or when I'm feeling especially hungover - and not even all the time then.

But then again I rarely cook, maybe my microwave use will go up when I have to cook for myself every day.

Edit - When you make your own popcorn LEAVE IT IN A BOWL FOR 2 MINUTES AND DONT PUT IT IN A PLASTIC ONE!!11!

Nothing says "owned" like a molten bowl or a deep-fried tongue due to boiling oil seeping out of popcorn.
