I don't mean to jump into this, but I have a 70gb harddrive + an 80gb external harddrive which I store My Documents in, and I have (I believe) a somewhat up-to-date graphics card and quite a bit of RAM. I'm currently running XP, and I haven't really considered Linux or Mac. I'd really like to stick with Windows, if not for other reasons, simply because I know the system and I'm used to it.

Would my 70gb computer be large enough to use Vista and still have enough space for everything else? Even with XP I have little more than 10gb left on my harddrive, and even if I remove every single program in my Add/Remove Programs I would still probably have less than 30gb of space.

If Vista takes up 15gb, that would almost certainly prevent me from storing all of my games on my computer, as even now I can't store even half of them and am forced to uninstall/reinstall games frequently when I want to play one that I don't have installed. That doesn't even cover the bugs either, which I haven't heard anything about. If you can talk about the advantages of Vista, you should also be able to tell me the disadvantages (and why the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, or the other way around).

Once again, my dad's Vista runs fast, plays all windows games without the memory usage or inconvenience of using something like Wine, and has all the damn features of your guys systems. WHY the hell would I switch when it works like a dream?

Also, some "Windows only" games are protected in a way that Wine simply cannot run them.
But, if you still want to use an inconvenience like wine that will use up RAM, you'll be able to run SOME "windows only" games, I'll stay over on the winning side and play any game I want to.

the OS itself is so stripped down that any ram that wine will take up will be nothing compared to vista and it's superfluously pretty graphics, anyway, any problem you find with wine, you can fix it yourself, the entire thing is open source, or you can look for updates, it's the miracle of communal programming.

anyway, the "winning" team is filled with losers.

Actually, the information I just told you about WINE not running some windows games at all was from WINE's own website, and there's currently NO fix for it.

Also, I have no need to use up less hard drive space, as I have 500 gigs.
My ram usage from windows is completely unnoticable, as I have 4 gigs, and the RAM the OS uses is automatically distributed with the programs you use to minimize the ram the programs themselves use up.

Sorry, WINE is a failure for gaming, and as far as I'm concerned, because of that, so are the other operating systems.

Lose.

so you spent a lot of money on something I've done for a fraction of the cost?

Congradulations, I think you've proven you're point, instead of doing the smart thing, why not spend a lot of money and get the same result.

Did you not read my post? I'm a PC gamer, WINE can't run all pc games, there is NO fix for this problem, windows can run all computer games. You didnt do the same thing because you CAN'T because you're not using windows.

I'll take windows as a win for every computer gamer out there today, there is no true alternative.

I can see why you'd make fun of the arguement if it was wii/360/ps3, because all of those systems have their own unique traits that make them all good for gaming in different ways. However, the arguement is completely valid here, as it is fact that there is no system that is better for gaming than Windows, due to the fact that even with a program like WINE, those systems still cant play all pc games, but windows can.

i made a serious post too but this thread turned into a fanboy shitfest long before salmonberry and i

you've made your point, people argued with you, what's left to be discussed?

Well all that's left for me to concede is that systems like Mac and Linux do have their very strong points that make them appealing too. If you're not going to be a gamer I'd recommend giving Mac or Linux a shot, unless there are specific applications that require windows that you would like to use or have to use for your job. You won't need a computer as powerful for those as you would for Vista Ultimate, and they will run just as efficiently and effectively as Vista for non-gaming purposes.

I'm not a Windows fanboy, I support all three styles of OS, just all for different purposes.

Okay.

My question was whether or not a 70gb computer (+ an 80gb external drive) would be able to handle Vista without having significantly more problems than with XP.

Also, I've heard about lots of bugs with Vista but no one has said exactly what they were. What bugs have you experienced, honestly, using Vista?

Honestly, I initially had problems running older win2000/early xp applications, as well as some issues with Vista's support for media players and certain media formats, however with the numerous updates and fixes applied to vista since it was released, those problems have completely vanished for me and all of my friends.

Vista ultimate MIGHT be a bit too much for a small hard drive like that, depending on how much space you already use with your current files and applications. A cheaper version of vista would take up less space, however you won't get all the awesome features that make Vista Ultimate what it is.

Many versions of Linux are free, so giving one of them a shot first is a very good thing to do.

I'm not sure how to switch from windows xp to linux without reformatting first though, so if you don't want to lose your stuff, you may want to stick with windows instead.

I'm honestly not sure anymore, I think the best decision for me first regardless is to whipe the harddrive, and then put in my programs later because I'm not really sure what's taking up so much space (I have uninstalled most of my games, I only have at most 10gb of games on right now and I only have about that much space left. ) But, what you're basically saying is that if I wanted the full benefit of Vista I should get a bigger harddrive?

Yes, basically.

In order to run Vista Ultimate at it's maximum capacity, you'll need a good sized hard drive, as it will probably eat up about 15 gigs, a 2.6 single core processor or higher,  and to be safe you'll need about 2 gigs of ram, and 512 video couldn't hurt, however some of my friends run it with 256 video.

It's well worth it if you want to game on a computer and be able to get the full experience of it.
