I thought the first Mother was never released in the states, then Mother 2 came out and it was released as Earthbound in the US. Mother 3 came out in Japan, but isn't in the states (it might be eventually)

Nintendo translated Mother into English, but they decided not to release it because they didn't think they would make a profit in North America. Eventually some hackers obtained a copy of the game and changed the title screen to Earthbound Zero because Earthbound (Mother 2) had already been released. And then they uploaded it to the INTERNET.
