I have never heard of a single mousetrap that has a spike, at least not anymore. It's supposed to be designed to snap the mouse's neck, killing them instantly.

Stickytraps are the worst. They're not bloody, but they're far worse. I saw a bird in one, and pulled it off with a stick, but then it was covered in goo and had lost its feathers.

Tom Fulp wrote an essay on NG about his awful experience with glue traps, but I think it's gone now.
