Oh my I've failed quite blatantly, the red in his beard is suppose to be the colour of his beard, not any glow from his pipe... The pipe is not suppose to be emitting any direct light since it's facing away from his face.

OoooOOOoohkay. In that case, yeah, it should be casting a little bit of light, because of refraction and diffusion. Note that even from the back of a sphere completely obscuring a light source, some light will still reach around. After light hits something (like the pipe) it changes it's angle and scatters, dissipating in a new direction. There should be a mild glow at least from the pipe, not as strong as the beard's color.

I hardly put them in anywere other than background detail
I should start using photoshop but I'm stubborn and I love the simplicity of flash and silhouettes... you're killing me here DigitalLemonClock

Be gentle, my first time using Photoshop to draw...

I'm not really content with the result but no reason to spend any more effort on it.
and I noticed I uploaded the wrong one, his mouth/eyes should look more elonged and alien.
Also if I would not have gone mad due to the complexity of Photoshop I could've aquired the right filters etc. and change the colour so it actually looked green etc.

Anyway you'll probably be drawn more so don't worry.

I still have no idea what people are saying about Gradients, I don't use them unless for backgrounds

But yeah the blur was over the top, I'm such a novice so I don't know what tools to use to get my results.
