If you watch the Science Channel and History Channel and Discovery Channel, he is simply repeating what many shows have said. However, I don't think the 'singularity' will be how they think it will be, or if it even exists at all. I also don't think the civilization types are particularly reflective of what a civilization will be like. On top of that, I don't beleive there is alien life on other planets (I don't really care either way, if there is then that's cool, but I just think there isn't), the probabilities we are dealing with are either 0 or infinite (meaning there is no other life or that we would have found other life), which stems from the fact that we know nothing about the universe. Making any concrete assumptions would be foolish since we are dealing with completely hypothetical concepts and lack sufficient knowledge to make any possible conclusions. As far as I'm concerned, they can keep looking for whatever they want, we learn other valuable knowledge from it besides their search for life, and that is what I am more interested in.

It's disheartening to think that there could be more life in the universe?

Caddy, I know there are bacteria that can withstand some amazing extremes, but that was due to the evolutionary process, they evolved to combat radiation or survive in acidic situations. I would think that planets would have to be nigh exactly like earth to support the origins of life. Scientists still have no idea how the first bacterium came about, but it would have had to be created with the genes to survive in the environment it was created in or it would have died.

Water, carbon, atmosphere, etc. are not at all exclusive to planets like ours, though. The formation of planets like ours is not exactly rare, either, and given how many stars there are in the universe, it is highly, highly, highly unlikely that there are none like ours out there.

Ok first thing is first. Paragraph breaks. Please use them. Who is "he" and what does he want with our debate forum? Third of all what the hell is this topic about? Extraterrestrial life?

I think it's funny you ridicule people for something they can't prove but you'll debate god till you're blue in the face.

I wouldn't say we don't know anything about the universe. We know about different galaxies, we know about black holes, quasars, we know about Jupiter's moons, and. (I could go on and on) Instead of picking on people who are looking for answers based on facts, I suggest you come off your cross and reassess your own beliefs.

I'm not saying extraterrestrial life is impossible. I don't think I ever said that.

We don't know much about the universe, but what we do know makes it seem incredibly likely that there is life on other planets. Hell, theres life on Earth that can theoretically survive unprotected travel through space (multicellular at that), so even if a planet isn't another Earth, there could be life.

I was directing that at Roman. It is impossible to deny that life on other planets is probable because the proof is right here on earth. It's just that the circumstances for it to happen are highly unlikely. Saying that it doesn't exist to me seems to be like saying a hat trick in hockey doesn't exist.

Neill Blomkamp. Roman's post was moved from this thread.

RomanClock

Yo, I didn't make this thread. Caddy moved these posts.
Cadillac if you want to debate something make your own thread.
