Finally got around to seeing this today. Yes, I cried for a good 3/4ths of the movie. I swear Pixar's made me a softy. The whole beginning montage with Andy gradually growing up and what not had me in tears. As well as that incinerator part. Tip of the hat to Pixar on this one. They really know how to make their audience feel some connection to their characters.


Also, Lotso isn't the villain in this movie. It's really Andy's mom. She's the one that wanted to get rid of those toys!.

I liked Toy Story 3, and I don't want to piss on everyone's parade but I really didn't think it was that good.

The whole middle section of the film suffered because there was no real threat established in the day care. They showed that it was a crappy place to be and that Lotso was nuts and evil and everything but they never had him actively destroying a toy, just chucking them in the sandbox, a punishment that they didn't even show as being that terrible. Why is the rough treatment the toys receive from the bad guys any worse than the treatment they receive from the innocent toddlers? It would work for most films but when you're dealing with characters who've already been established as being essentially immortal you need to make the threat a lot more permanent.

Really they should have brought along an extra toy from the house who didn't matter too much and then have Lotso or one of his cronies smash him up a bit and leave him out to get taken to the trash. That would have really hit home and made the whole escape seem a lot more dangerous.

I also wasn't too keen on the amount of space ranger Buzz and spanish Buzz. As funny as they were as ideas, they cheapened the characters, working more as punchline jokes than the smart conversational comedy Buzz was used for in Toy Story 1.

Once they were out of the day care, everything became pretty great again. The dump scene was great although Lotso's betrayal and comeuppance again suffered from his lack of outright evilness and the furnace scene really was perfect.

The sections of the film that worked the best for me though were the parts with Andy and his family. They were by-far the most real, I suppose because they're things that all the writers could directly relate to, whereas the escape story was more of a typical movie subject. Virtually everything Andy did was captured perfectly and the moment between Andy and his mum acted as the perfect realisation point for Woody and was really lovely.

The ending was great too although it was a real shame that Andy went on for so damn long about each and every one of his toys I know it was a final send off and everything but it really started to get unrealistic. Sure have him say all their names or whatever but surely a real teenager wouldn't explain all of his toys in such detail, just the awesome ones like Buzz and the special ones like Woody. It seemed a bit unnecessary to me. The scenes of him playing with Bonnie were a lot more touching and did more for me than any amount of emotional chatter. I guess the Pixar staff just didn't want to let the toys go either.

Still, I enjoyed Toy Story 3 a lot. I just think to deny there are some pretty big problems with it is just a bit naive. I didn't let it ruin it for me because I knew their heart was in the right place but I couldn't help but tune out a bit in the middle. That's just what happens when a story isn't told perfectly.
