So I'm now 34-33 in 1v1. Number 3 in my ladder division with close to 700 points total.

I really really wish they'd promote me to at least silver as I feel bronze is ultimately an insult to my skill level. 1 more game and I'll be at the top of my division.

http://sc2ranks.com/char/us/781751/Ryzinn (still has me at 33-33, should update shortly)

I'd say its average to above average at the least. Most people I play are flat out awful, thus i'm hoping for a division change so I can actually get better.

edit: Just hit silver.

i went and bought this game, mw2, and cod4 and when i got home and grabbed the sc2 box I noticed it had been opened.
: (
i had to drive all the way back to walmart and get a new one.
just installed it.
never played the first one, and i've never really played a rts game before.
COOL LETS DO THIS
HELLO EVERYONE.

Corporal Clock

too bad it's such a terribly flawed game

the campaign has a lot of cool missions but the overall story is terrible, a lot of the cutscenes suffer from stupid mistakes and the ending is just a smack in the face. i could list everything that's wrong with it, but that would be a looooong list, and loaded with spoilers - but a simple one is the cutscene where raynor mistakes valerian for arcturus; mengsk sr has short, black and grey hair, while mengsk jr has long flowing blond hair

the multi-player is fucked up by the stupid region locks and lack of LAN support, though the league system is nice so you don't have to get annihilated by koreans every damn time you play like in SC1

if you want it for the story, just pirate it

if you want good multi-player... well, it's better than the campaign by far, but it's still kind of shit how you can't play with people in different parts of the world, if you aren't a starcraft fan i would recommend people to wait for it to be discounted or just go play something else

you can have your regional code changed, at the cost of having your stats reset and your entire record wiped, but this is a lengthy process and shouldn't be necessary in the first place

tl;dr blizzard is a mediocre developer at best and starcraft 2 was screwed up by weird decisions like regional locks and having to stay connected to the internet while trying to play offline (wtf??)

just about every complaint you have with the game is stupid. LAN is no longer necessary, mengsk jr. could've had a blonde for a mother, the campaign was great, the ending was pretty good (considering the zerg and protoss campaigns aren't available yet)

Region locks are probably your only legitimate complaint. Everything else is a matter of opinion.

As for playing offline, you can blame piracy for that. It's not blizzard's fault.

You think the story in SC2 is bad? Have you played the first one? It was on par with them.

It's not that Mengsk Jr had blond hair, or whether his mother was blond, it's that Raynor sees him from behind with his LONG FLOWING BLOND HAIR and Raynor assumes it is Mengsk Sr. The problem isn't him being blond, but the WTF factor when Raynor can't tell the difference from the two... from behind. Anyway, there's a lot of other things that stick out, are screwy or are just plain wrong, this was just an example.

Another one would be the firebat in the armory, which was clearly not properly tweaked out - if you look at the right arm, his left, while he is moving around, you'll notice that it distorts pretty heavily around the elbow. The load times are also kind of long on occasion, though only for some missions. I'm assuming it has something to do with how many mini-cutscenes and talking portraits show up. The Zerg also just use the Overlord portrait for their buildings, which is really lame considering how cool the Terran Adjutant and Protoss Executor portraits are. They could at least have used the Overmind portrait from the campaign, something, anything else. The Overlord one isn't even good, it looks a lot more cartoony than most of the other Zerg portraits, compared to ones like the Hydralisk and Mutalisk.

This is not to say that the campaign was BAD - I liked most of the actual missions, especially The Devil's Playground with the lava rising and lowering, and the one with the day/night cycles where you have to burn out the infested colonies, but the cutscenes were not up to par. Also, Swann is a cool character but he looks like a damn dwarf from World of Warcraft. This is highly inconsistent with absolutely every other character you see, anywhere, in the game. Even the redneck SCVs or the guy in the Goliath looks more 'normal', or at least like feasible humans.

LAN may not be 'necessary', but considering how damn consumer-friendly StarCraft was, you'd assume they would have followed in those footsteps. The multiplayer spawn feature was really nifty, and one of the things that made the game king back then. I always preferred Total Annihilation as a strategy game, but its multiplayer was horribly broken and worthless after the boneyards went down. All you get with this is a couple guest passes, and you aren't able to play across regions unless you send 3x e-mails to blizzard and get 12 in return, most of which being THANK U 4 E-MAIL in 7 different languages and a bunch of surveys. According to one of my friends who tried to have his changed the other day, they apparently ran out of keys to swap with, so this doesn't even work anymore. This is part of the 'piracy' thing, I would assume, as the EU and US installers are actually so significantly different that you can't just log in with either - you need the right regional install.

Also, the offline thing is more that it has a button for doing it but it doesn't actually work without being online, making it pointless. THAT is Blizzard's fault - that was their decision. There are already cracked versions of the game floating about, so all they really did was screw over their own, legit customers, which is the main problem with the game.

The only good part of the ending was the rain of burning battlecruisers at the very end. Oh, and Blizzard kept their promise about making the ending conclusive instead of a cliffhanger... which I guess is better than nothing at all. Still, it was a lot more positive than the endings for any of the original campaigns. The establishment of the Dominion dictatorship, the Overmind manifesting itself on the Protoss homeworld, Tassadar giving his life to kill it... I guess it's a lot like the BW protoss ending, actually. In fact... There you have it. It's nigh-on the same damn ending, except not on Shakuras this time, and one of the main characters die. They use a Xel'Naga artifact to blow up all the Zerg EXCEPT for Kerrigan who is magically saved by alien pixie fairies, the end. The last two endings, the UED occupation and the Zerg as the most powerful faction are pretty 'bad' too. The 'smack in the face' part comes from it being so damn cheerful, and also not very original since they did almost the exact same thing in Brood War.

I added spoiler tags to be nice but it doesn't really matter. The point is that no, the ending was not satisfactory at all, being even dumber than those stupid UNN newscasts, which at the very least seemed to be somewhat in style with previous portrayals of the media in the StarCraft universe... and they were optional, thank God.

Quote from: Bulba;1778136You think the story in SC2 is bad? Have you played the first one? It was on par with them.

The SC1 story wasn't perfect, by all means, it could have been fleshed out so much more (and it was in the novels apparently) but it had a different sense of scale, and a lot more seemed to happen... It was also kind of nice with the little cutscenes that showed events from around the place, like the Backwater Station patrol ("I love you, Sarge!") instead of just following everything the player did. The key events of the SC story however were so much more magnificent, tragic or terrifying. One of the first cutscenes in SC2 shows how the invaded Terran worlds have deaths numbering in the billions, and then barely mentions it again. One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. Hell, even Raynor and Horner are more concerned with Kerrigan than the billions of lives lost. So much for idealistic rebels.

Another one of the flaws with the original StarCraft I guess is how they resurrect two fallen hero characters, Kerrigan and Fenix, into new forms. It would have been fine with just one but two was kind of so-so, though they might have tried to rectify it when they killed off Fenix. I did like both characters and their fates were cool, they were just put kind of in close proximity with one another.

Despite all this, I'm not saying that everything is bad. Matt Horner and Tychus Findlay are both nice characters, as well as Swann (even though I hate his character design), and a lot of the new units and changes are actually good once you get used to them. I was kind of annoyed at first that they switched the Firebat for the Marauder and the Vulture for the Hellion, but the Marauder is actually really good once you get used to him. The Hellion a little underwhelming since it can't move and fire at the same time and I miss the spider mines, but it's a decent counter to massed zerglings and stuff. I had a little trouble getting used to the Roach over the Hydralisk, but the Hydra is a lot more powerful now so I guess it's a fair trade-off and Roaches absolutely slaughter marines - which is why Marauders are a necessary compliment to your early Terran forces. Protoss have their Zealots as always, except now they look ten times as badass with a perfectly matched unit portrait. The Stalkers aren't as cool as Dragoons were, but their blink ability is very nifty. The ability to warp in units anywhere you have a pylon is nice for surprise attacks as well if you can sneak a probe into the back of the enemies' base, which is quite effective depending on the map. Other fun units include the Viking, which is an absolute blast with its air and ground modes, and the Colossus which scales cliffs like nothing.

but yeah fuck regional locks what the hell screw you kotick fuccer fagote asswhole ..|.,

NintendrCkolc

On a lighter note, I just reached #1 in Silver Division ladder with a record of 68-54. Gold division is within my grasp with the goal being platinum. If I could get into diamond I'd shit.

HELLO EVERYONE.

PirateClock

i never play solo games cause i like to specialize in a particular unit and if you pull that shit in solo you'll get buttraped. Back in warcraft 3 i only build Knights+Griffons and hoped my team mates would take care of magic shit.

For you kids who are new at it.

If you are up for it then give this a watch, it's a bit long but the guys entertaining and helpful. Helped me with getting a hang with the multiplayer.
For an abridged version he says:
Make a mental loop list that you go through containing four or five tasks. His example was build workers, keep resources low, keep supply high, construct buildings and train units.
Make sure that when you go to use something you learn the hotkey, this sucka says to hover over the button with the mouse. Find the hotkey and then avoid clicking it and press the hotkey.
He says other things too but I am tired and cannot remember.

Some other general advice is to scout the enemy so you know what to expect and can find a way to counter it.
Learn to build up strong economies and constantly make use of your resources.
If you are Terran use supply depots and production buildings to block the ramps leading into your base. You can lift up the production buildings and the supply depots can go underground so your units can walk over them.
Learn about some builds and strategies, try them out yourself and also try to counter them. Chances are you'll see a lot of marines, marauders, reapers, zealots, void rays, roaches and mutalisks early on in some matches. BE PREPARED.
So yeah I can't think of much else.

In terms of the region l locked multiplayer, Blizzard has said they're going to make the North America region accessible to Australia and New Zealand. I haven't looked into this to see if any other regions are going to be included.

buttplug

Yeah Day9 took me from bronze to diamond during the beta. I play only off and on now but the things I learned keep me at a platinum level.

Watch your replays, see where you went wrong and learn from your mistakes.
