Although I agree that focusing on negativity and whatever it is that bothers you is pretty counter-productive, I think it can also be cathartic and uplifting to get your life's problems off your chest instead of keeping it bottled up inside. Maybe that just means telling a friend about how much of a dick your boss is over a beer at the bar, but I think when you share your problems with others who are willing to listen, you get to look at the problem from someone else's perspective through their advice and experience.
