currently thinking about the Bond henchman from Casino Royale who I guess they were too embarrassed to just give an eyepatch so they did something silly

Slurpee

I am researching the silly eyepatch man
his name is Adolph Gettler, played by actor Richard Sammel, and the Bond wiki does not mention his mysterious half-glasses

Slurpee

he is based on a character from the book whose real name is unknown but presents himself as a salesman named Adolph Gettler
troublingly, the wiki describes him as "identifiable by his glass eye patch, screwed in like a monocle"
idk what that means but it suggests the goofy half-sunglasses might have been done to be accurate to the book, making it not as funny

Slurpee

I am currently trying to find a text copy of the Casino Royale book

Slurpee

EON might have a pretty tight lid on it, the first page of results all seem like opportunities to buy the book, which I am absolutely not going to do

Slurpee

I found a poster they're selling where the image of the poster is made up of the entire text of the book
I am going to copy some of the text into google and see if anything comes up

Slurpee

it turned up a copy on archive.org

control-F seems to be finding the name Adolph but is not scrolling to the right part of the text, I have to manually scroll siiiiiiggggghhhhhhh

Slurpee

wow the thing in the movie where le chiffre just hits James Bond in the balls over and over again is actually in the book lmao

Slurpee

chapter 25 is called "black patch" if this isn't it I am going to be furious

Slurpee

QuoteWhen the man had turned his face towards them,
Bond noticed that he had a black patch over one eye. It
was not tied with a tape across, the eye, but screwed in
like a monocle.
????

Slurpee

okay so I guess when he says "screwed in" he means like when british people say "screw up your face" and he just means lowering your eyebrow and raising your cheek? maybe?
otherwise idk, monocles are definitely not screwed into the face with screws, I am pretty sure

Slurpee

wow the book doesn't even have an ending action sequence, it's the fucking end of Snake Eater lmao
Vesper is Eva, and she's a Russian agent instead of Chinese, but she writes him a letter and kills herself and Bond cries and that's basically it

the eyepatch man does not come back to get killed like in the movie

but a line from a waiter said it's probably hard keeping the patch in all day and I'm going to take that to mean it was basically just a blackened out monocle
I am not sure if this is cooler or lamer than the half-glasses or a regular eyepatch I am now in too deep to have a superficial opinion

Slurpee

a search for monocle eyepatch just brings up a bunch of steampunk bullshit, but our scientists came up with a mock-up of what it might look like

Slurpee

okay

I'm going to go with:
- regular eye patch is cool.
- eyeglasses with one lens blackened out is cooler but in a dumb way because it can't possibly black out all the light (or hide/protect the gruesome open hole you have instead of an eye, whatever the case may be)
- monocle eye patch is the worst of both worlds and doesn't seem to exist which makes sense because it's worse in every way than a regular eye patch. ian fleming- possibly stupid???

Slurpee

if you're just joining us here on page 5727, here is what I am currently having the correct opinion about:

miracle fruit

clyde barrow had one of his lens' shot out in a gun fight before getting totally owned by texas rangers

this is the only time the 1 darkened lens was cool

heres a picture of Warren Beatty from the movie Bonnie & Clyde eating what appears to be a raw potato (?) because all of the actual photos of Clyde with his damaged sunglasses are very gory!

PhantomCatClock

it's not a "raw" potato it's a spiced potato. It's a delicacy where you get a potato, do not wash any of the dirt off, and roll it around in spices. I wouldn't expect an uncultured fepth like you to understand.
