I guess on most instruments they sound like fifths (basically a normal chord with one of the notes missing (making it actually not even a chord, a harmonic interval) which makes it sound kinda hollow and incomplete), but on electric guitars they sound badass because the distortion makes the simplicity sound really punchy and in your face, and they're popular because it's super easy to play because it's only two fingers on the frets lol
