I was going to post that I don't understand why digital artists and publishers always emphasize to work in CMYK from the start in Photoshop if you're planning to print. I know CMYK has a different color range but either way your monitor is going to be displaying in RGB and you won't quite know what it's going to look like when printed

then I realized that it probably helps you to make better choices about colors as you're making it (rather than having to convert to CMYK at the end and just let the computer make its best approximation) and I'm not sure what my objection was

then I was like "maybe some day soon, e-ink will have developed to the point that digital artists could work on an RGB monitor but have a secondary display that's e-ink so it's less instantaneous but a better approximation of what the image would look like when printed (since as with ink it's reflective rather than emittive)"
and even though it's just something I made up in my head, it's the first time in a long time that I've thought about prospective future technologies and not wanted to fucking kill myself lol. imagine, a technological development that's not just a new way for you to never own anything again or for corporations to scam more money out of you or for you to be endlessly surveilled. I'd imagine Photoshop and such probably do this for you in a way that people who know what they're doing (hi vcr) would balk at it but normies sending their inDesign porn mag to the printers probably get good results, but like, working in magazine print, I know that someone who knows what they're doing re: overpriced industry colors and CMYK is how you make something look 10x nicer than it otherwise would. THIS WAS A long roundabout way of saying "google that 'cmyk black' image"

I'm wondering now if the CMYK eInk display would even work like that. Could it be backlit, or does that kind of make it additive color all over again?

I guess I've never really messed with color profiles doing rudimentary image chopping in GIMP, but I think one place profiles really matter is when you're mixing raster and vector stuff and there are parts that need to print as the same color. Even black will look different on paper if it prints as K only, versus K plus all the others. Sending the printer an RGB image is probably the equivalent of the printer asking how much ink to put, and you saying 'guess ;)'

or, also, when I'm laying out my InDesign porn zines in Scribus, because unlike Pcat I believe in free software, it is an understanding of output color profiles (or lack thereof) that is the difference between something #000000 coming out of my monochrome laser printer solid black, or not fucking solid black for some reason. but so far leaving the color profiles default and selecting Output Intended For: 'Grayscale' works for my purposes, so I've survived another day without learning anything

I looked it up and apparently e-ink is a brand of e-paper lol. ok, didn't know that. that has got to already be in danger of becoming a genericized brand name, right? that's like finding out "drone" is a brand name. no it's not that's just a thing that exists now

the internet says there are multiple technologies for color e-paper. there is a subtractive one by e-ink and they have a page explaining how it works but as soon as I saw that it uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and White my brain suddenly realized how tired it is

the last time I sent something to a printer was in the middle of my villain backstory arc where i got so mad at adobe that I never paid for (non- video game) software again

wasn't even going to comment but it was also an Adobe product
