If it was live action the director would probably cast one of those gay child actors from Nickelodeon or Disney Channel. It's how movies are being made nowadays.

That cartoon (anime, whatever) was my childhood

The adaptation seems to have taken quite a lot of freedoms, though. Astro's dog Jump wasn't a robot, but a real dog (who belonged to Toby before he died). Also, there is a lack of other key characters, like Uran, Skunk or Atlas, though they might just have been kept out of the preview to avoid spoilers or something.

They better have kept Astro's ass machine gun. Seriously, nothing owns more than shooting rounds of bullets through your robotic anus.

I really like the design of the robot dog that is supposed to be a real dog. I can deal with it being a robot because it looks really awesome.

The girl with the pink streaks in her hair makes me want to murder someone though. The fact that shitty designs like that can make it into the final film makes me weep.
