I go both ways depending on how much I give a crap about it, but it makes me wonder if pronunciation is based on consensus rather than credentials, or more so on region and dialect.

Kind of a mix. See, people who learn pronunciations from reading them can be  wrong, but if you learn a word of your native language from a chain of native speakers, I say it's correct no matter what, because it's your fucking language. Words that have been adopted into your language can either be pronounced with the native pronunciation or your own one, but not an incorrect native pronunciation. For example, saying "caucus" as "kaw-kuhs" is okay, as is "kow-koos", but not "sow-koos", because c is never s in Latin OR English borrowings from Latin (except Caesar by majority). Not so, unless that's a peculiarity of your dialect. Vague uses ei as in clay and fag uses æ as in bat.

Compromise: pronounce them both as (in)-fee-neet. That way it doesn't sound weird when you put the stress on the first syllable, as all Germanic languages do, and it's uniform, as well as closer to the Latin pronunciation.

Actually, I don't think the "ksjer" sound pattern exists in any English word, which how you can remember accuracy is different from words like accent and accelerate. Same for "tsyer".

I think not being able to say it is a Dutch thing. A lot of people say tree or tsree or even tzree. Most words with th are hard for Dutch people I think. Like earth, truth, thirteen. I've learned how to pronounce most. Three is still difficult.
