Seriously, when people think of socialism, they exclusively think of the outcome rather than the concept. While the outcome has almost never been a real success, it's because it doesn't live up to the concept. Socialism is a good idea on paper, but prior attempts have turned out bad. However, socialist concepts when introduced into structured democracy work much better under certain circumstances (Unions, healthcare etc).

People don't realize this, so when they hear about socialism, the first thing that comes to mind is Joseph Stalin sodomizing Uncle Sam while drinking the blood of a thousand babies whose bones were used to make a bible burning furnace.

I don't know how it is where you live, but I have never met anyone who seemed to believe anything along those lines. But then, I do live in Canada, and people are generally more tolerant of unorthodox ideas here, it would seem.

Personally, I think the ideals of socialism are excellent, but I think the idea of sharing would be better executed by an entirely voluntary grassroots group, with nobody being forced to join in. You know, just people being good to each other. I think the major flaw with previous attempts at it is that they were organized and enforced by governments. If we are to learn unselfishness, it must come about through a cultural revolution. And I don't think it's right to try to force that. People have to learn for themselves. Communist nations have been counterproductive in my opinion, because they have created the notion that socialist ideals entail the sort of hell that we've seen in these countries.

Many people already do that, but the vast majority of people are too greedy for a system like that to ever work. It's not education that makes people not want to give people things for free, it's just basic human nature.
