Tevinter Imperium = Roman Empire
post-blight world = Post-Roman Europe/Mediterranean
Chantry = Christain Church
Andraste = Christ
elves = Jews

at least loosely

EDIT: I meant to post this in the spam forum.

Thor

So you really think that a generic fantasy setting with the generic human empire fighting the generic orcy horde with the generic forest elves and the generic dwarves living in caves mining and the generic religious and magic sects that have all been reused over and over since DnD stole half of it from tolken is some brand new idea designed to be a subtle nod at a random chunk of history that has nothing to do with anything else in the game?

The only explanation I can think of for that ridiculous notion is that you've recently studied roman history or you've been playing Braid (or both)
Quote from: MafiaMettaurWhat the hell is with that shit you posted? You know what, I'm joining the Locks, just to stop stuff like you!
Quote from: polyhedronclockYou're a fucking clock, what else do you have?
To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

NintendrCkolc

I played dragon age the other day and realized it fucking blows.

Actually I studied Greek, Indo-European, and Jewish civilizations last semester : )

Is it really odd to think they would draw from our own history in writing the story?

The elves once held their own empire, were enslaved and decimated, and are now the Dalish are struggling to uphold their old traditions. Their homeland Elvhenan was taken from them once (Jewish destruction of the first Temple), then they resettled in Dales (Cyrus of Persia fostering the Jews and rebuilding the Temple). Eventually they lost that homeland and were dispersed (First Roman-Jewish war).

The Dalish elves recognize Andraste as a good person but not a prophet of the maker (Jews rejecting the Messianic status if Christ)

Elves in human cities recognize Andraste and worship the maker (Jewish converts to Christianity)

Elves in human cities live in segregated Alienages (ghettos)

Dalish elves believe that one day they will get their homeland back and rule it themselves.

I also want to point out that Tolkein himself drew influence from Jewish culture and history when creating his dwarves:
"Here the Dwarves became occasionally comedic and bumbling, but largely seen as honourable, serious-minded, but still portraying some negative characteristics such as being gold-hungry, overly proud and occasionally officious. According to The History of the Hobbit, Tolkien was now influenced by his own selective reading of medieval texts regarding the Jewish people and their history.[5] The dwarves' characteristics of being dispossessed of their homeland (the Lonely Mountain, their ancestral home, is the goal the exiled Dwarves seek to reclaim), and living among other groups whilst retaining their own culture are all derived from the medieval image of Jews, whilst their warlike nature stems from accounts in the Hebrew Bible."

Take it or leave it, I just find it interesting how our own human history may have influenced the people writing for Dragon Age.

I thought that the first few times I played it. I thought the combat was tedious and boring.

But eventually I came to love the great characters and cool information available through dialogue and Coxed entries.

Honestly I have this problem with ALL Bioware games. hate the gameplay love the rest. I just find the MMO-like gameplay more tolerable than the shitty boring FPS elements of Mass Effect, and the repetitive gameplay of KOTR.

whatever
