Winsor Newton is giving away free artists acrylic. Since we all know you're poor as fuck and probably surviving on the same tube of mars black for the past 3 years, this'll probably be good for you. Normally I don't endorse any shit, but I know there's a few painters floating around.

While we're at it, for all the painters in here what kind of materials do you like to use?

AstronautClock

Thank you for requesting a sample of Artists' Acrylic.

As we have a limited number of samples available, we cannot  guarantee that you will receive a free tube.  If, in the event that we  no longer have any samples available, please contact your local  stockist.  To find your nearest stockist, see our store locator.

Yeah those things go quick. I tried to let you guys know quickly. That sucks too, the pigment in the paint goes off like a fucking atom bomb.

yeah man I hope I'll get some

If you do, try their acrylic gel to go with it. Thins the stuff out, and it's nice if you want to put like magazine clippings and shit under it. I usually go with the matte, but they sell it pretty glossy too. You can oil paint over it too.

I have a bottle of matte acrylic medium right here ;D

AbsintheClock

I got the sample pack of golden acrylic mediums cuz it was on sale. Works pretty good though. I mostly use the matte acrylic. Golden is a good brand for acrylics too, especially if you air brush.

RenegadeClock

I like oil paint. Acrylics dry too fast for me. I also like to use gessoed masonite panels instead of canvas.

I used to mix acrylic with a little water to prevent this, it was a skill on his own as if you add too much it just drips, if you add too little it doesn't do jack

Yeah, but even then it's going to dry completely within a few hours, plus water quickly dilutes the consistency and color of the paint. I think oil paint is more fun, because it's like chemistry. You can mix all kinds of different oils and solvents with it to change it's texture and behavior. You can also blend colors after they're on the canvas.

Shit how long does this last? I won't be near any paint shops until September.

AbsintheClock

Have you tried using acrylic for underpainting? It's great if you've already got a drawing and you just want to slop mop color up. I prefer the slow drying quality of oil too, and I think the colors are more vibrant. As for painting I like to paint on 300 press watercolor paper either covered in gesso or bulls eye shellac. (It's cheap, across the street from me, doesn't yellow, and less likely to warp) I like the consistency of watercolor paper, and when it's shellacked as opposed to gesso the tooth on the paper is a lot more firm.
