I'm trying to give them a chance because everyone says they're incredible, but so far, it's not clicking with me. I've had some interesting flirtations with metal and wish to expand, but I'm not sure what's so emergent about Tool's music. I'll admit it has more ambitious production values, but it doesn't emerge as anything terribly different to me. So far I've listened to Lateralus and 10,000 Days; is it better for me to start with Tool's earlier stuff? Who would you recommend over Tool? Perhaps I just need to give it another listen...

Kodiakclock

listen to the structures of the songs and rhythms. also the tunes are just great
i think Aenima's a better album for beginners. Has more really memorable song songs if you get me. I recommend Stinkfist and Hooker With a Penis.
Keep at it, it took me a while of not being really into it but they suddenly clicked with me.

This is a most awesome album, I've never got seriously into TOOL but this album has some great lyrics and the whole thing is composed really well.
