Because the 40k universe is more accessible on a digital medium.

Aaanyways, felt as if CC could use a Warhammer thread regarding Dawn of War II and Space Marine, though I guess you could also talk about the titles developed back when Electronic Arts held the rights to make games based on GW's famous IP.

What is Dawn of War 2?

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 is a real-time strategy game that takes away the base building aspects you'd see in a traditional RTS, focusing more on battlefield tactics as you would will command squads to capture strategic points to ensure your victory.  In addition to the lack of base building, you'd have other factors that are uncommon in other RTS titles, such as rear armor, cover, melee combat, and suppressing fire.

In the Singleplayer campaign, you command a team of 4 heroes with gameplay elements that combine Relic's RTS formula with that of a top-down strategic role-playing game.

Another mode that I find to my liking is "The Last Stand", an action-strategy/survival game where you command a single hero, ranging from a Space Marine Captain to a Tyranid Hive Tyrant or Chaos Sorcerer, and you team up with 2 random strangers in a fight for survival against waves from different factions.

Space Marine

The most recent release from THQ and Relic comes Space Marine, a third person shooter/Hack and slash hybrid for PS3/360/PC where you play as Captain Titus of the Ultramarines.  Rather than having you hide behind cover to regenerate your health, you need to stun your foes, and execute them with your freakin' chainsword to gain health, cuz you know, you're totally not a servant of Khorne.  Also, there's a competitive multiplayer mode where the Space Marines fight the Chaos Space Marines in familiar multiplayer modes.

Other games that I probably won't talk about because I haven't played them, or because they felt boring
Fire Warrior (PS2/PC)
Dawn of War 1 (PC)
Space Hulk (DOS)
Space Crusade (Amiga/DOS)
Epic 40,000: Final Liberation (PC)
Kill Team (PS3/360)
Vengeance of the Blood Angels (Win9x)

I'd like Dawn of War 2 a lot more if the cover system didn't feel so clunky. I dunno if I'm doing something wrong but I'll tell some dudes to take cover and some will go and stand IN FRONT of the cover like there isn't enough room.

I've only played the Space Marine demo on PC, but it was absolutely fantastic, and It'll probably be the next game I buy.

This is just a graphical thing. As long as your squad is "in cover" they are getting the defensive bonus. The same thing happened with Company of Heroes.

I really enjoy Dawn of War II's campaign as well as its expansion's campaigns, but mostly if I'm playing co-op. I don't know many people that play it though so I never got a chance to run through the whole thing. The multiplayer was fun, but ever since I got into Starcraft 2, League of Legends, and DotA 2, I have not touched either DoW2 or CoH's multiplayer. Not for lack of liking them, but these other games are just too addictive.

I might be available for a scenario or two, though I doubt I'd be available to play the campaign from start to finish

Also, am i really missing out if i started at Retribution?  The DoW2 story looks kinda interesting, though I would like to assume that there's a really good reason why Relic jumped out of Games for Windows - LIVE.

Space marine is pretty bad, I suggest against buying it. The campaign is very short and just the same thing over and over for the whole game. The demo is good, but there is literally NOTHING IN THE ENTIRE GAME that you don't do in the demo. Just replay the demo 4 times and you have an experience superior to playing the whole game. There was no challenge at any point in the game, even though I was playing on the highest difficulty. This is personal preference, but I don't think a game can be good if there's no challenge at all.

The online multiplayer is also horrendously bad and the customization wasn't as good as I was expecting (I was expecting customization on the level of APB, which it did not deliver).

Overall I'd give the game a 3/10. Not worth the money or the time.

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

Firewarrior
Dawn of War
-winter assault
-dark crusade
-soulstorm
Dawn of War 2
-chaos rising

Space Marine

I love Warhammer shit.

I actually liked Space Marine, though I agree with Thor that you don't end up changing the gameplay much. It's probably better if you're a fan of the 40k universe. I just really liked how devoted they seemed to be to the source material. And there were some pure badass moments, particularly with the jetpack/hammer.

Is Dark Millennium cancelled? I cannot seem to find any recent news, and the site is dead.

There's been no word either way.
I think THQ refuted the rumors that it's been cancelled, now that I think about it.

Looks like we won't be getting an MMO.

Welp

It'll probably be good at least.
