Thinking of buying a Noviation Launchpad

Is this a good decision? And do you need anything else the pad to use it (like programs or something like that)?

I have no idea what they do personally but I have a friend who uses one who tells me all the time to get it and that it'll change my life or whatever.

Don't know what an MPC is. Right now my problem is that I load a sound and assign it to a button, the button lights up, showing that something is loaded to it, and then I press it and I hear nothing. So confuse
