I think people just latched onto Day Z because they're so desperate for a "realistic" zombie survival experience, which for some inexplicable reason a lot of people put up as the Holy Grail of gaming. arma is not all that fun. I like the fact that the arma series take a realistic approach but it takes all the fun out of gaming.
Currently i'm playing rising storm (red orchestra 2) which makes a good balance between "realism" and fun.

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of War Z, considering Day Z is a mod for ARMA 2 and has never been sold as far as I know.
