I've used a couple over the years and the only one I've had genuine problems with was DreamHost. Basically all I need is PHP5 (ideally 5.5) and MySQL 4.1+ (again, ideally 5+), .htaccess files, aaand if not the ability to have multiple websites on one account for cheap, at least multiple domain names pointing at the same website. (Oh, and supadupa customer service) ((and access to PHP settings wouldn't kill me))

I've been using GoDaddy and haven't had any problems, but since this is going to be a new thing and I haven't been talking about webhosts in a long time, I wouldn't complain if someone knew of a comparable service that was cheeeeaper.

I don't think I'll need anything close to dedicated hosting for a long time, if ever, so I'm judging the cheapest plans on these sites

The host I'm using for this site, BuyShared, has some of the least expensive shared & managed regular old cPanel-style hosting plans I've ever seen. Like, somehow even the high-traffic plan is way cheaper than BlueHost, HostGator et al., and it doesn't pretend to be 'unlimited' hosting. I haven't actually had to contact customer service.

Holy shit, that is cheap as fuck, and it's not like this site's running poorly. Do you get FTP access? What about that other nonsense I mentioned?

This costs per year what I was gladly willing to pay per month, if it does have errythang I want

edit: also, I've never bought a domain name on one service and used it on another. Is that easy to do with GoDaddy?

VCRClock

You get FTP access, PHP and MySQL (I think both are up to date but I couldn't find an easy way to check), .htaccess works, multiple domains ought to work. You might not have more access to PHP settings than you'd usually get with a shared hosting account. You can probably ask them for the details before you buy.

I've never done business with GoDaddy. Pointing a domain you own to a different web host is a basic domain feature, though, so it shouldn't be hard at all. GoDaddy's FAQ should tell you how to set the nameservers if you can't figure it out.
