Quote from: polyhedronclockYou're a fucking clock, what else do you have?
To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

PhantomCatClock

I'm sure trump is gonna let that end reasonably

Marlin Clock

That's some real pinko sounding nonsense to me. I'm fine with protests but these bolshevik larpers are getting out of hand.

PhantomCatClock

I'm just waiting for them to say it's worth it

Trade that occupied street for the god given right to murder unarmed, cooperative civilians and get a pension for it if someone was recording

Thor

They'll probably just get bored after a few weeks and go home having accomplished nothing, like Occupy Wall Street.

I genuinely think most cops aren't abusive corrupt racist jackasses. and judging by official and personal tweets and interviews the majority opinion is they seem to agree the knee murder was ludicrously beyond what was required to restrain him. turning this specifically into "fuck all cops" like it's become isn't going to fix this. even if I think you should maintain a healthy wariness of them in general, in any country. god help the idiots who think getting rid of police entirely would be a good idea.

now a good thorough cleanup of all the corrupt big city precincts? sure. the minneapolis police force was already corrupt and incompetent as shit, and this was the final result of an organization that got used to doing whatever it wanted and having no oversight or authority above them. that shit builds on itself and festers. corrupt precincts are unsalvageable. gotta replace the whole thing top to bottom. "the baby has pooed the bathwater. gotta throw em both out." get a new baby and new bathwater just call in the state troopers and national guard till they're set up. well as far as I'm aware. I don't know of any movie-style situations where one cop manages to unfuck the precinct. there's plenty of bastards in otherwise normal police forces that will misreport things or turn their camera off so they can get away with horseshit I'm not sure what to do about those until they actually get caught abusing their power.

there's also the issue with any city above a certain size where the cops stop being part of the community. if you ever hear of people having good experiences with cops, it's often because they're from small or smallish towns.  compared to a big city precinct where they either don't trust or know the community, or they have outright contempt for it. their only friends are other cops.

the closest thing I can think of to a solution would be three things. we would need to somehow invent a better system to filter out the inherently shitty ones before they even get a badge. a form of oversight that prevents massive corruption and abuse yet doesn't hamper their ability to enforce the law. a way to somehow maintain a personal connection with the entire community in big cities like in smaller ones. I have no idea how any of this would be done or what the logistics are for doing so. I don't the first two are even possible. it sounds like offending precinct might actually get replaced, and I'd genuinely like to hear their response to your question if they get kicked out, but I don't see much happening on a nationwide level outside of some new regulations in precincts that already know better anyways. though I'm sure this will be used heavily as a political weapon by both parties and by both candidates as the election ramps up for votes and sewing societal tension and disunity. all of whom don't plan on doing shit for anybody.

I don't think any of the DEFUND THE POLICE people mean to literally take all their funding away—but there is the social media equivalent of the rioters going around shitposting it. Not to sound like a conspiracy nut, but someone this week went to my (small) city council meeting and had a speech about getting rid of police that was a word-for-word copy of something a very distant relative posted a video of of her own small town's city council meeting in Arkansas. Maybe write an email to your senator so that's not all they're seeing

An email, not a note in your usual unsolicited porn shipments to the capitol

The idea of defunding the police is (to my understanding) redirecting resources so they're not so overwhelmed.

So instead of putting millions into the police's 'war on drugs,' money would be allocated into fighting drug addiction.

Or money would go into mental health departments so the cops aren't the ones responding to autistic men sitting in the streets with a toy truck.

Thor

The war on drugs is low-key one of the single most vital aspects of this whole thing and I don't think it's getting the attention it deserves. It vastly increases the amount of unnecessary police-civilian interactions. It grants police massive leeway to fuck with people. It powers the prison economy.

Popular support for the war on drugs is fairly low right now. With one big push we might finally be rid of that crap.

The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did. - Ehrlichman

Couple dudes got lynched in california. one was like 25

ed: Looks like the younger one's been ruled a suicide, but it happened in a KKK hotspot (we fucking have those?) and none of his family think he would do that. There's going to be an investigation

They could both just be suicides. The only evidence that they were lynchings seems to be the imaginations of activists and the family not realizing he was suicidal. It only made the news because race-bait articles get those advertising bucks right now.

oh gee wow i hadnt thought of that

But yeah, if that makes you comfortable. I'll wait for the blood to be explained. Then wait for the explanation of how a 6'3 man hanged himself with a USB cable. Then how the 24 year old didn't break that twig of a tree. I like devil's advocate as much as the next guy, but really think about the wording of the phrase. 2,000 people marching from that tiny tree to the sheriff's station is news on its own, so is the attorney general's probe. Pump the brakes on that dismissive silencing for at least a couple of days. "Race-bait".
