Quote from:  News.comMIAMI--As I predicted last week, Microsoft has decided to extend the life of Windows XP, although only for a limited class of machines.

Microsoft said on Thursday that it will continue to allow Windows XP Home edition to be sold for a class of computers it calls "ultra-low-cost PCs." It's a category that covers machines with slower processors, smaller screens, and in many cases flash memory for storage, rather than a traditional hard drive.

Microsoft will give PC makers the option of using Windows XP or Vista on ULCPC devices, said Michael Dix, general manager of Windows client marketing.

Still, the minimal hardware used in ULCPC systems might make Vista ill-suited to such a task. The decision to discontinue Windows XP might have driven even more device makers into the hands of Linux, hence the extension... Full story here.
Well I knew something like this would happen. At least that means a few more months or so of support for the Xp user.

ulcpc's generally use linux as the standard anyway, anything to cut the costs windows is only usually offered as a second option for more cash.

It seems very strange that Microsoft can "allow" their OS to only be sold with certain systems. Since when do software manufacturers get to tell their distributers how to do business?

Beats me. Mabye Microsoft pays them to do that or something, and if they don't follow Microsoft's orders they don't get paid by them or something.

Vista sucks, it almost feels like a racial extermination, pardon the Godwin's Law there.

I'm still on Win2k.  And will be until it won't work anymore.

screwdriver_clock

Well Microsoft can refuse to sell their OS to vendors, and they are only giving the OEM to manufacturers selling these cheaper PC's, so they technically have every right to do it, even if its a radically ridiculous move.

You can turn avatars off anytime you want.
But it would be nice if you could only turn the avatar of specific people off instead of all or nothing.

why can't they make a revised version of XP standard on every computer, Vista sucks any way and it takes 1.5 Gb of RAM to run. Fuck Microsoft
Know to not be funny. Haha

For once, I actually agree with something a clockfan says. Go figure.

I have a question - what happened to XP's buttons?
My dad bought a "professional" laptop which still comes with XP standard, and the OS looks like it's made for people with bad eyesight.

Can't you change that in the Appearance section of Display settings? Or maybe in the Accessibility part of Control Panel. Check both.
yay a new sig

Still, there are available copies of XP that are sold in stores. I can see Microsoft not giving a deal on XP anymore, but how are they able to legally control the sale of machines on which XP gets installed? It sounds arrogant and preposterous.

Vista is superior to XP in almost every way, especially in preformance! I don't even see how it's debatable. Just get a good version of vista.

XP is outdated, slower than vista, and can't even recognize 4 gigs of ram! It stops using ram at about 3.5 gigs.

On my dad's computer, we have been using it for years, and have never had a single problem with it. I haven't upgraded just yet because I was using my money to upgrade my computer's hardware itself first. I'll probably be getting vista soon.

Also, If your computer can't handle vista, it absolutely sucks, no exceptions.

i'd like to hear some actual points to be made for vista's superiority, sobe, nearly everyone i've talked to says vista is utter shit.

i'll stick with XP until i see good reason to switch.

I can't tell if you're being dumb on purpose, attempting to start a stupid OS fanboyism war or if you're actually that dim.
