a little more about calculative thinking that i learned today...
bleh, it was kind of weird and now its going to be hard to explain... its like doing something to the they and not for the self.  Calculative thinking is doing without knowing why we are doing it, we do it for the sake of calculation.  Ex. we find how to make bigger and cheaper televisions or something.  It really doesnt help you find yourself, it just impresses people that you have a huge tv and stuff or something.

my teacher compared it to plastic surgery.  A person calculates the fact that by having plastic surgery, they will look better and get more sex.  However, they do not meditate and think about how plastic surgery will affect the person in a deeper level.

btw, if someone has studied Heidegger please comment here.  I have only had like a reading and one lecture on it lol.

Science isn't supposed to make us happier, you fuck, it's supposed to make us more knowledgeable. Both are good. Sometimes being more knowledgeable makes us happy, sometimes it makes us furious or terrified. Regardless, it helps us learn what's true.

Science is used to explain every little detail so we feel secure in what's occuring, rather than simply overlooking it joyfully, and leaving things to said fate, faith, or wherever your beliefs lie.
 
Most of the people I see believing in things like faith, or fate, are indeed quite happy compared to most of the people I know who are indulged within science and knowing how to tediously describe every little bit of every little thing. Of course they don't know as much, or have as much knowledge, but what is knowledge anyway?

No. Science is used to understand systems in the world that we are a part of. It is used to understand the effect of our actions and the effect of external factors on us. Without the scientific method, we're lost.

I think people are easily jaded by "terrible truths" and are far too attached to romantic concepts. This is why you see more happy people who believe in silly shit – ignorance is bliss to the romantic mind, and most of us are told by society that if you aren't a romantic you're an uncreative scrooge.

btw what did we do prior to the scientific method?  was humanity really that lost?  I think you're doing the same comparison that "civilized" people do to the "uncivilized" people.  You label it as lost, because in your perspective, without the scientific method, you yourself would be lost.  However, making the generalization of humanity in is entirety... is a far stretch.

articswirl's last statement sounds pretty true for me.  People who are constantly concerned for that end, for the goal, sometimes get caught up with it and forget to enjoy life.  Now, this doesnt mean that a person who doesnt really care for technology cant use it, it just means that that person doesnt depend on it for happiness, thus making them a freer person.
