So there was this space ship docking, which was fine because I had to take a piss anyway. I went, nice and easy, I come back and the thing is still in approach. Fuck.

GreyClock

I think that if I would turn on the television now, it would still be docking.

DigitalLemonClock

undeniably hard-hitting criticism

It is boring as all fuck, but you gotta give it respect for being the grandfather of all sci-fi films.

If it wasn't for 2001 we would still have movies where giant alien bug men come to earth and destroy everything and kidnap all the women.

patriotclock

I tried to watch this movie 3 times and I fell asleep each time. So I deleted it from my DVR.

FluxCapacitorClock

I still haven't watched my copy because it's long as fuck and something else always sounds more interesting.

It's unbelieveably good but you've gotta approach it with the right frame of mind
It's definitely not a hungover with some time to kill movie.
The bit with the old man at the end scared the fuck out of me and I don't know why.
Like a rat squatting in a doll\'s house.

I still liked 2001, but I will admit that it is one of the most overly-long, pretentious films I've ever seen. I don't care if it is Stanley Kubrick. I've also noticed a new trend of young movie aficionados who are watching Kubrick films and saying "Why the hell was this guy such a big deal again?"

It feels good to say what I want. It feels good to knock things down. It feels good to see the disgust in their eyes. It feels good and I\'m gonna go wild. SPRAY! PAINT! THE! WALLS!

LeekClock

You've got to be in a very philosophical frame of mind to be able to sit back and enjoy 2001. I think it also helps to understand some of the background of it so that you don't interpret the things you don't get as "pretentious". EG., the monolith

no no no no no no!!!

the reason that movie exists is for the pure beauty of the photography tied to the music

the plot and themes are less important

while watching it, really think about how some of the shots could possibly have been executed

DigitalLemonClock

well i'd rather have people who are honest about disliking it than the people who pretend to understand it, but to me it's a very beautiful movie

It's so long because it's meant to last for the amount of time that acid lasts DUH

patriotclock

I don't care if it's long, I was watching Amadeus last night and I am not sure but I believe that is longer, what I do not like is that I tried to watch it 3 times and it put me to sleep each time. I was never able to stay awake through the whole thing. Also I wasn't watching it late at night either, once was at 10 am another was around 3pm and I am not sure the other time I attempted to watch.

Was Blade Runner inspired by 2001?

No, the conspiracy was that the trippy part at the end of the movie would be when you began to trip on acid if you took it at the beginning.

But honestly, the last ten minutes are the best part of the movie.

joliet_jane

I happen to love all the pretty space ballet parts.  And everything else.

it definitely took a certain amount of inspiration from it yes. not to a huge degree.
