BTW, Nintendo has discontinued the sale of the USB setup "until further notice," it says on their website.  (And now I know why. )

Back to the original topic:  there's a problem with the software setup.  When I plug in the actual dongle, Windows acts preemptively and tries to install it independently while the essential files are being installed, then it gives me an error message saying it can't find a driver it needs.  (It's being installed AT THE GODDAMNED SAME TIME!)

New problem: after I've inserted the dongle into the USB port and the setup bar is almost full, it prompts me AGAIN to insert the dongle.

Buy a wireless router (I think the Wii uses a G type connection) and use the Wii's built-in wireless access point connection. It's not too hard, I have it.

Will it interfere with the other wireless network in the house?  I can't use what I've already got, since its security is too state-of-the-art for the DS.
