Every story needs a character. Sometimes it can just be one, sometimes it doesn't even really need to be a person, but the story has to be about something. In this thread, prospective NaNoWriMoans can discuss the characters they've thought up so far. Heroes, villains, romantic interests, spunky sidekicks, background characters, it's all fair game!

Please post all the info about your characters in here, to keep the main forum clean.

So far, the only character I've come up with for my story is the protagonist, a man named Phineas. At the outset of the story, I think he affixes an object to his heart that he thinks will make a very valuable change to his personality, but it ends up having serious ramifications, and he needs it removed. I don't know much about him yet, but I think he's steadfast and very clever, maybe a little introverted.

I'm not gonna make one but I have an idea I got today, the war  diary, of a squirrel warrior! Genius
(if you chose it you muts at the end thatnk me for the idea) :)

LOL RANDUM HUMOR!

I think a good story should involve something people can relate to, not war Squirrels. Even though I may not write a story, If I did, I'd go no where near that.
if there were two guys on the moon and one of them killed the other with a rock that'd be pretty fucked up wouldn't it?

I believe a literary character can be anything, if it's written in a way that we can relate to, and if we can connect to its adventures. Hell they've written stories about horses, animals, robots, aliens, deities, trees... it's incredible what characters we can love.

There's a word for that giving human personality to non human things. And fantasy is my life.

I know, but I honestly don't see War Squirrels going anywhere is what I'm saying. I said Characters People can relate to, that didn't necessarily mean they have to be Human.

It's called "anthropomorphism". It's a common literary device where non-humans seem human when you read them. One example of this is E.B. White's story Stuart Little, which is about a mouse, but we don't notice.

Au contraire. What does a squirrel warrior fight for? To take over a better tree? To get more nuts than neighbouring squirrels? To arrange safe passage across a highway? To launch an offensive against those little chipmunk bastards?

Any idea can have a lot done with it.

Snake summed up my reply for you. I'm just saying that even in anthropomorphism, Squirrels going to war would make absolutely no sense whatsoever in any way I can Imagine. Anthropomorphism can tell good stories, don't get me wrong, But War Squirrels is just....I can't see it happening.

My reply deflected your point, not his. I think squirrel soldiers sounds funny.

Yes but my Question is How would that be pulled off and why. I'm just saying that his first post seemed like an attempt at random humor is all.

The Spoiler

So I guess I might keep a running list of my characters here (or just get down some ideas even)

Main Protagonist - Krygnar, Materials Engineer (all the people have wierd names)
Seeing as I already put down most of what he does in the plot thread, I'll just type stuff about the actual character here. He mostly fits into the clever-guy-on-a-mission archetype, but maybe I'll expand it a little. Perhaps he'll have some unusual skill that ends up being useful (like being able to impersonate a voice realistically after hearing it only once). At the beginning of the novel, he's motivated mostly by curiosity and a search for the truth. By the end of book, he becomes a sort of anti-tyranny revolutionary figure. (due to all the fighting with the police, etc.) He's fairly charismatic, so a variety of characters end up joining him at one point or another.

Supporting Protagonist - Kameer, General in the police(a.k.a. Crime Mitigation Force)
This guy gets whacked at the beginning of the story, and sets the whole plot into motion. The notes that Krygnar finds in Kameer's journal are what send him on his quest. Also the bounty hunter that kills Kameer is the same one that attacks Krygnar later on.

Main Antagonist -Governor Jrale Xanthrop (maybe the wierd names were a bad idea on second thought)

Gov. Xanthrop is the man that ordered Kameer's assination (and later, Krygnar's). He rules with Machiavellian philosophy, and will readily take extreme measures to meet extreme ends, though most of the time he just manages his cabinet.

Supporting Antagonist - Driksis, Bounty hunter for Gov. Xanthrop
Fits the apathetic assassin stereotype. Has a peculiar love of violence for its own sake, but not so much the people being harmed things so much as the prospect of things blowing up/falling to pieces/etc. Kills Kameer, dies in a confrontation with Krygnar.

Supporting Antagonist - Nagla, sergeant in police force

Nagla heads the manhunt for Krygnar. After spending much of the book chasing Krygnar, he finds out why Krygnar is trying to escape, and in disbelief over the existence of an outside world + government conspiracy, he orders his men to shoot him. All of the men back down. When he orders a young officer to kill him,  the officer insists that he won't at Nagla while he shoots him. When Nagla turns his back, the man puts his back to Nagla's and shoots himself in the forehead with a high-caliber pistol, killing both of them.

Supporting Protagonist - Hermit
The hermit is a kind old man with no name. He helps Krygnar through the wilderness, and represents the last herald of the natural world.

Suggestions are welcome

No it's called personification I think

Naw, it still works. In fact, I'm liking it more. Maybe squirrels are behind the military curve compared to people. I know Boston could be more irritatingly random than that without even trying.

Of course, it would have to look kind of inconspicuous, so the humans don't wise up... immediately. ;)

Sombra

My main character is a vet of the Iraq war, he used to have it all, played quarterback on his high school varsity football team, had women jumping all over him and fighting each other for as little as a smile or a wink from him... but the war changes all this.

While on his tour he's nearly killed by an IED, it scars him badly with third degree burns and he is shortly after honorably discharged once he's released from the hospital. A few years later, he is nearly friendless, almost totally secluded, and spiraling into a prescription opiate addiction that may kill him if he can't escape from it.

That sounds more like a plot. What about his character?

Sombra

I can't really say yet, he'll reveal it through his actions as the book progresses.
